L The Readin Bicentennial Commission met at the Reading Public
krf.ibrary, at 8 pm. on May 25th. Present were chairman Ehler, members
Barclay, Bishop, 31anc0ard end Farquhar. Absent were Celehar, idc0auley
and Proctor.
The minutes of the previous :ne-ting were accepted as presented.
The main item of business was the opening of bids for the Pitkin
publication, which had been duly advertised and rec_ ived.
Before the formal opening the chairman explained that It was not
customary nor essential to award t 'r.'e contract at the opening, but accept-
anceriight be delayed ten days to allow time for consideration and checking
of references. The Commission also recervc-d the right to reject any or
all bids, or to accept whichever one it felt would serve the beet interest
of the town.
Three bids were then opened : 1) Irving Co. Walpole 43905-
2) Martin Co. Portsmouth, i .H. $2200; and 3) Cotreau, Reading 2500.
The specifications were as follows: 1000 copies, 6x9, 144 p, plus
cover; body text : 11/13 Bas'nerville medium, 3/4 Inch margins all around,
except pagination; Stock: 60 lb white finish opaque vellum; Cover: Hamilton
Duo Color embossed; Blndirt¢: glued on hinge cover, side wire stitched.
Proofs to be submitted. Delivery 30 days.
:•:rs. ':filler asked Roland 31anchard to check on the low bidder
(Earth of Portsmouth ) requesting sanples of work and names of customers,
and to resort back to the Commission at Its meeting on June 1, when the
contract will be awarded.
:':rs. 1.11ler reported that the introduction to the book will
contain a statement by the League of Women Voters that the first portion
Is a reprint of the original Pitkin manuscript and not a revision, and
that the second portion is their own responsibility.
The ;anuscrlpt for the College Club childrerfs history of Reading
was turned over to Irs. 9arclay for examination. She will pass it on to
trs. Shop for a second reading, and then Hise Farquhar will check It.
"Rooftrees" Is still in process but i=rs. Bishop hopefully will
hava the manuscript completed by the end of June.
Re : the Common project . The 3arden Club 's landscape planner
has vlelted town and 71r, Louanls,and agrees with the Commission that the
sign must be on the triangle and that the main Common be left alone. Mr.
Lousnis hopes the project may be completed by July 4th. There has been
some flak by the Lions Club over the present sign which, apparently, they
put up but have never taken care of.
The Depot luseuxi article is expected to reach Town meetina floor
L on 'T'nurcday, and is given a 50-50 chance of pac::a _e.
