HomeMy WebLinkAbout1977-03-17 ad Hoc - Bicentennial Commission Minutes :larch 17,1977. Minutes The Reading Bicentennial Commission met at the Reading Public Library on ..arch 17, 1977, at 8 pm. Present were chairman Miller, members Barclay, Bishop, Celehar and Proctor. $lanchard and Pic Cauley were absent as well as :'Catherine Farquhar who has accepted a new position wor'sing out of Worcester. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as distributed. virs. Idiller, chairman, reported concerning the Reading Common project . Mr. Lousnis had told her that the Garden Club would like to extend it to the main Common rather than the triangle, and to use extensive landscaping. After considerable discussion the Commission voted unanimously in favor of the original Concept , and against this new Idea. All agreed the present open space should remain open, and in no way should the view of the church be obstructed. The next tonic was the status of the Depot heritage ;useum. Since the group has opted for organization as a private organization, free of Selectmen control, t'ney have been informed they will be liable for rent for tie building. In a hearing 'before the Selectmen t'neir request for free use , or nominal rent , was denied, and we are now informed that they plan to appeal to Town -eeting by placing an article in the warrant 4 for the upcoming annual meeting. Publications are the chief projects to be consummated. The League of Women Voters ' new edition of Pitkin's The Story of Reading Government is ready in completed copy. The College Club' s children' s history of Reading is at the typist , and pictures are being selected. It will be referred to the Uor,CiisslDn for approval shortly. The above publications, together with Reading 's Colonial Rooftrees, the new edition of w!±ich is being prepared by Eleanor C. Bishop, should all be completed by summer. The Oral history tapes, 12 in all, are being indexed, as are the Bicentennial slides and pictures, with the assistance of - Newell H. :Morton and ;Malcolm Choate.
