HomeMy WebLinkAbout1976-10-19 ad Hoc - Bicentennial Commission Minutes October 19,1976. The Reading Bicentennial Oommission met at the Reading Public Library, at 8 pm, on this date. Present were chairman :Idler and members Barclay, Bishop, Blanchard, Celehar, Farquhar, McCauley & Proctor. Absent (� was Diane Palaima whose letter of resignation was presented by Mr. Blanchard. On motion of Jane Celehar, seconded by Miriam Barclay, It was voted to ackowledge this with regret , and that no replacement should be sought since the Commission Is wlnding down its activities. The minutes of the previous meeting were accented with one correction, that the Junior "omens Club contribution was 4350.00 rather than '-300. Chairman I:Iller distributed a detailed financial report , and explained the Minutemen request for funds for the White Plains trip. All were inclined to approve, and it was voted, in recognition and appreciation of all their efforts during the celebration, that up to 4,400 be made available from the Festival surplus, with Jaycees approval. The Common Sign proposal by the Board of Public Works was discussed at length, and it was voted to indorse the concept with expressed concern for one as permanent and vandal-proof as possible, and If costs are thereby Increased the service clubs and 'he Bicentennial might provide additions. The Jaycee representative present concurred and said the group would support the project wholeheartedly, and indeed is actively looking for new service projects. The Junior Womene Club was reported concerned over future sales of the Reading prints. They have provided up to 0700 for the Bicentennial. t was noted that profits of future sales are theirs - not the concern of e 31centennial Commission. Since everyone had such a good time it was suggested there might be a Bicentennial Plus-One Ball next year. Copies of the new Heritage Trail Guide and the Jaycee Reading Festival Day brochure were distributed to Commission members. Katherine Farquhar will take a copy to artist Ekrline Robinson, the photographers, and each of the house owners. Bra. Bishop has arranged for a batch to be available at the Reading Garden Club sale on November 4. The Guide will be on sale at the Town Building, and at Charles ' and the Book Haven. Chairnan I-tiller will make a "report of progress" at the November town meeting. highly.&a. Ella Roman took color movies of the r'estival paraGe day and a print has been purchased. It is suggested that a --bowing of celebration pictures and movies be arranged , first for the Commission, and then for the public. Included along future projects possible from available funds are : markers for the additional houses extant to 1800, mlcrofllming of valuable nuscrlpt source materials, purchase of a print of the Coblidge film, and he Common sign.
