The Bicentennial Commission met at the Reading Public Library, at
%w8 p.m. on 29 June 1976. Present were Chairman, Miller and members,
Barclay, Bishop, Blanchard, Celehar, Farquhar, McCauley and Proctor.
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted with the addition of
the name of Katherine Farquhar to those present. The minutes of the April
15 meeting, taken by Mr. Proctor, were also approved.
Mrs. Miller reported on acquisitions to the picture archives as a
record of local Bicentennial activities. Both black and white prints
and color slides are included. Some are gifts, some are duplicates
made at cost. Ms. Farquhar moved and Mrs. Barclay seconded, and it was
voted unanimously that photographic expenses arranged for by the chairman
to date be endorsed, and that authorization be given for additional funds
to complete the photographic record, up to 0100.
The chairman commented on the general bell ringing project for July 4
and said it had been referred to the Chronicle, the Selectmen and the
churches.
Work on other projects Is continuing: three additional oral history
Interviews have been taped; Donna Lewis is at work on the third-grade
Reading haat cry; the League of Women Voters expect to complete the new
Story
of Reading Government also by Fall; and the Heritage Trail is nearly
complete.
` Mrs. Barclay has conferred with Mr. Louanls on the specific site
`llor the Lobs Pound marker.
The brochure copy is now ready for printing. Katherine Farquhar
outlined the planned format , developed with the Cotreaus, with details
of stock, page size, etc. and cost . After discussion of details it was
voted unanimously to authorize the printing of 2500 copies as outlined in
the proposal at an individual cost of 18.4 cents, to be sold at 25 cents
each. Mrs. Bishop moved and it wa+oted to authorize payment for a picture
of the mile marker to be used in the brochure.
At the suggestion of Dr. McCauley it was voted that, If approached,
bulk lots of 100 copies might be sold at 19 cents for re-sale at the
25 cent price,
Mr. Osborn presented the financial statement of the May Founders
Day Festival. The Commission voted its sincere appreciation and great
commendation to the committee and its chairman for a job well-done.
The festival reports a surplus of 01323.26 and It suggests the Commission
propose possible projects for its use. A formal letter of thanks and
appreciation will be sent them together with word of project suggestions.
Initial suggestions voiced include the photographic record, another
slide/tape program by Ron Daddario, or a fund to provide flags for public
buildings - as a Bicentennial gift.
�. The members agreed to meet next on Thursday, September 16, same
time and place, and then adjourned at 9:50 p.m.
