HomeMy WebLinkAbout1976-04-15 ad Hoc - Bicentennial Commission Minutes April 15, 1976 The Reading Bicentennial Commission met at the Reading Public Library at 8 p.m. on April 15, 1976. Present were - Joyce Miller, /° Chairman; Dr. Roland Blanchard; Ratherine Farquhar; John McCauley and Maurice Prootor. Minutes of previous meeting to be available at next meeting due to illness of secretary, Eleanor Bishop. Mrs. Miller presented to commission members a Report of Progress of the camdasion to be submitted to the Town Meeting May 3, 1976. The commission was impressed with the brevity. and completeness of this report and voted to accept it as presented. There was a brief discussion on previously sett policy on use of commission equipment. Policy to remain as previously set. Commission members suggested that a second tape and slides be made of theTavern Life program so that original may be kept intact and new set could be shown on users equipment thereby aaving original tapes, elides and equipment. Mrs. Miller read correspondence from American Revolutionary Bicentennial Commission suggesting two minute bell ringing across nation on July 4, 1976 at 2 p.m. E.D.T. The two minutes to commemorate the first two centuries. Commission will publicise and endorse suggestion with lettere to Chronicle, churches and [ selectmen. `r Above American Revolutionary Commission also suggests flying American flag for 21 days continuously from June 14 to July 2. Chronicle to be notified. Mrs. Farquhar believes that brochures on houses will be available shortly. The plaque is still to be installed at Lobe Pound Mill. Roger Louanis and Miriam Barclay to get:;together on atone location, etc. Dr. Roland Blanchard consulted with Wiley Osborne and Davy Crocket. 30 units are to parade May 22 with Concord unit and Aleppo Minutemen. Everything set to go and no problems forseen. Bicentennial Ball going ahead in good order. 1 Mention was made of scroll to be carried to the Bicentennial wagon train but Maurice and Roland mentioned about Phil Parker, Jr. , reportedly doing this Job and the commission agreed not to.duplicate his efforts. Mrs. Miller passed the good word on that the Bicentennial Ball account was within 01,000 of goal. Dr. Blanchard noted tbhat there appears to be 160-170 patrons `, of the ball so far. Bo it seems that we are in high gear and well greased! / i 1 _2_ I Mrs. Miller made mention that the College Club offering still ( in planning stage so far. Mrs. Miller has had inquiries from two historical societies so far on the showing of "Tavern Life" . It seems, as usual, that the commission has backed a live bourse! May we always be as fortunate. Col. McCauley suggested that a definite person be made responsible on a signed form when material from the commission is to be used. This to reduce the chance of pirating or reproduction. It was mentioned that the history to be done by the League of Women Voters Is pretty well shaped up.
