The Reading Bicentennial Commission met the Reading Public Library
G^'on Kurth 17,1976. Present were chairman Miller, Barclay, BlFhop, Blanchard,

The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as distributed.
Mrs. Louanis reported on the gravestone recording project , which Is
nearly completed. 90 rubbings have been made and a number of hand copies
where atones were in poor condition. A map will be provided, the rubbings
treated witha preservative, and the results placed in the Library. A few
rubbings were made for the church, and one of Sharper Freeman's stone for
the Afro-American Museum.
:'yrs. Miller read the letter sent to the Cemetery Board noting the deep
concern of the Commission over the adverse effects of multiple rubbings
by unskilled persons. The board seemed not too concerned and presently
allow anyone in town to do so, but bar outsiders. Even the schools are doing
It and Ms. Farquhar said she would speak about this. Members may wish to
pursue the matter individually.
:•are. Barclay and Mrs. Bishop agreed to select the location for the
marker at the Lobs Pound mill site.
Mrs. Wells and Lrs. Zemlin detailed 9 tapes completed, 2 scheduled for
the Oral History project . All have been rough transcribed, but typists are
needed for finishing. They are being indexed in the Library locator file,
it and available there. This number meets the original committment . Mrs.
'W,iller emphasized, however, that the Commission felt it was best to get
more interviews, while they are available, even if all transcription and
editing cannot be done at this time.
The Glynn house Is to be restored and the marker for It is at hand.
Katherine Farquhar also reported that the give-away flyer with map and
list of houses should be out by May. The map is being done by Earline
Robinson. The Friends of the Library are providing sponsorship. The more
detailed brochure will be completed afterward, using the map as centerspread.
Roland Blanchard, for Wiley Osborn, said fund raising was in progress,
and the souvenir booklet for the festival weekend will include capsule
town history, organization writeups, and details of all Bicentennial
activities. Marais Morang told Mrs. Miller ball arrangements are going
forward.
The LWV's Story of Reading Government update will be finished immed-
iately following the April election, and should be ready a month later.
The College Club project , history of Reading for the 3rd grade level,
Is still unsettled. The original draft and their ooncept of the task
did not meet Commission specifications, and it is being reconsidered.
Carolyn Milley has begun a series of article for the Chronicle on
Bicentennial projects. The first to appear was the slide-tape show,
`, Tavern Life in Early New England, prepared by tar. Daddario'skroup.
The meeting adjourned at 10 p.m. to meet again on April 8, same time,
