the chairman be authorized to recommend to the Selectmen appointment of
a replacement on receipt of a designee from the high school social studies
department , so that the new appointee may be present at the next meeting.
Ron Daddario and his group reported near completion of the slide-
tape program of "Tavern Life in Colonial America° and made their presenta-
tion of the slides and script. They have done an excellent piece of work
and the commission members expressed their appreciation of the results.
Wiley Osborn and Roland Blanchard made a progress report on plans
for the festival weekend in May. The ball has been shifted to Friday,
May 21, with parade , review and other events on Saturday, the 22nd. The
Heading Symphony concert will take place Saturday night. Dr. McCauley
suggested all details, especially Invitations and acceptances of minute
men companies, be pinned down without delay, to avoid disappointments.
Katherine Farquhar sent a report that the last three plaques, and
site markers are ready for placement , sit$ approvals having been received.
Ut was suggested the plaque at Lobs Pound Hill site might be placed on
boulder there. Mrs. Miller will check this possibility with Roger
Louenis of the Board of Public Works. The brochure copy is nearly ready.
The College Club project , a history of Reading for third-graders,
is now in the charge of Donna Lewis and the script is promised for Mrs.
Barclay 's review in a week.
The League of Women Voters project , a new and expanded edition
of Victor Pitkin' s Story of Reading Government , is progressing. Keene
Hoyle is to write a chapter giving an overview of economic and social
changes from 1944 to date. Completion will follow the May vote of the
town on the proposed town charter.
Rooftrees new edition Is progressing slowly but is expected to
speed up from now on. No completion date has been set.
The Commission is authorized to continue until 1983, but present
consensus is that the program should be completed in 1976, or early 1977
so that the Commission could go into town meeting in May 1977, making
Its final report , and asking for discharge, either then or in May of 1978.
By then the question of an historical commission for the town, not tied
to the depot , might be resolved.
The meeting closed at 9:45 pm to meet next on Wednesday, 11 Feb. ,
