Bicentennial Commission The commission met on February 13, 1975, with four members present, and Captain Gray of the Minutemen. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as distributed. Mrs. Miller reported that March 17 was an unfavorable date so she had settled on Thursday, March 20 for the public meeting and had arranged for the use of Shepardson Hall at the Parker Junior Hiph School. The Credo Club will participate. A representative of the State Commission will present, and Selectman Cameron will receive, the flag designating Reading as a Bicentennial Community. Dr. McCauley, unable to be present, had forwarded a proposed agenda for the meeting, which was discussed and approved with minor adjustments. David Biette, also unable to attend, had reported to the chairman regarding the posters, handbills, and other publicity arrangements for the meeting. The Chronicle plans a feature article, and will print a broadside: "warrant for the meeting." The distribution of the broadsides was discussed, and the number needed. The poster will feature this is the official opening of the Reading Bicentennial celebration. It was voted that Mrs. Miller be authorized to pay the janitorial fees for the March 20 meeting, if they are not picked up by the School department. Mrs. Miller Pave a report of income and expanses of the Commission to date. Income : $1935 (750 matching Prant for the marker project, 2.185 contribution) Expenses: posters 20.14, stationery $54.25, tapes for oral history $46.97, totalling 121.36. On motion of Miriam Barclay, seconded by Maurice Proctor the bill sheet as presented was so roved. On inquiry of Frank Oraupner to Miriam Barclay about plans for a photographic record of this Bicentennial it was voted that a subcommittee be set up for this purpose, David Biette, Peter Barron and Don Winkler were named as prospective members. The commission would pay for necessary supplies and stills, slides and movies might be contemplated. Mrs. Miller said it would be possible to arrange to borrow from the school department, probably in the summer, a stop-action movie projector which will enable identifications for the 1935 movies to be made, and a script prepared. Hopefully the same might be done for the 1942 school movie owned by the Lions Club, and the 1920 film of the making of Memorial Park which is owned by the Antiquarian Society. It was reported that Roy Skinner was enthusiastic about the markers and would install number one at the Stocker house after which Mrs. Ebeling will send out letters to the other house owners and invited them to view it. Arrangements were to be made to have a picture taken at the "unveiling,"if possible. Mrs. Ebeling is working on the retaking of the pictures for the brochure. Linda Hamel will do a feature article. Maurice Proctor reported that the specifications for the Parker Tavern project were completed and copy sent to chairman Miller, and that the report to the State will go in before due date. Mrs. Miller discussed the possibilities of town and society cooperation in the needed parking area on society and town-owned land west of the house. It was voted that an article should be placed in the warrant for the annual town .meeting asking for certain funds for Bicentennial activities. Included will probably be about $550 for the Oral History project, a possible small amount for the special weekend events although it is anticipated that most of this will be self supporting under the leadership of the various service clubs., an item for photography, the gravestone project, the new edition of Rooftrees and a small amount for eene?r;7� d st ti a eAse Th�ip budget is to be ready for presentation to the Finance comn<it ee' �ia rf rs week in FSarph. - The gravestone project is under way. The committee have arranged with Mr. Vik - for a survey,- are-obtaining a list of soldivis, and-m list of those who died in 17761-- -- -- Thee are considerinc a few ru`"Fines, some photography, and. some copying, with probably an album of pictures, and a possible microfilm. The Friends of the Library have designated up to $150 for the project. - Jane Calabar said they had sent out letters to organizations asking for their scheduled events in order to make un a master calendar. Numerous events have been entdtively scheduled and the committee is hoping for definite dates shortly. The idea of a Liberty Pole was again mentioned and will be explored further. The College Club project of a local history for the third grade level is not far enough along to be included in the current budget plans, but can be included in a. later request if feasible.
