HomeMy WebLinkAbout1974-06-06 ad Hoc - Bicentennial Commission Minutes Nsfas?, 1974 The Reading Bicentennial commission met an�, 1974, at the ateading Public Library. Mrs. Miller presided and members, Barclay, Bishop, Blanchard, Ebeling and McCauley were present. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as distributed. Mrs. Ebeling presented the name of David Biette, 165 Pine Ridge Rd. a junior of Reading High. Mrs. Bishop moved acceptance and the forwarding to the Selectmen for official appointment to the Commission. So voted. The chairman read a letter from the Massachusetts Bicentennial Commission concerning the grant refusal. It was a valid application but 145 applied for far more funds than available, and it was felt the Reading project would not be hurt by a short delay. Re-submission was urged. New forms will be issued for September applications when expected funds should be available ($105,000) Feeling there was nothing to lose the Commission voted to re-submit the two applications for the Parker Tavern restoration and the Heritage Trail. The new edition of Pitkins' s Story of Reading Government to progressing, and hopefully will be ready next spring or summer. A meeting of Friends of the Library has endorsed the Heritage Trail program and has authorized up to $150.00 for the gravestone project. .... The Oral History committees Jane Blood, convenor, meets an Thursday next with Jack Kelly resource person Ruby Willis, Charlotte Thompson, and Frances Wells. Rey will censidotime, cost, people, manpower and other details involved in such a project. Mrs. Ebeling reported that most of the drawings for the Heritage Trail brochure aro ready, and she requested a sample plaque to show to homeowners. Or. McCauley will see that one is provided, on receipt of specific wording desired. Present projects being well under way the question is - Does the Commission want to launch additional new ones? and if so what and when? Start planning for the focal-point weekend, summer 176, Founders Day '75? Local groups are seeking clearances of plans . Dr. Blanchard agreed to head up a spin-off group to coordinate public activities, and service groups, and Mrs . Celehar offered to work with him. The gravestone project could get underway this summer - with photo- reproductions of stones and sample rubbings . A number of possible participants were suggested. Dr. McCauley reported that the Reading Minute Man Company is being reactivited and has been accepted into the Council of Minute Men.
