An open meeting of the Bicentennial Commission with organization
lopresentatives and other interested citizens, was held in the Childress
om at the Reahng Public Library at 8 p.m. on 4 April. About 20 were
present.
Pars. Miller reported on the state of the two grant requests,
optimistically and said there would be another round of grants in July.
She also stated that the Commission had received $1085 in donations which
could cover the Historic Trail project, and said that it was now time to
plan other projects, .
The meeting was thrown open for expressions of interest, suggestions,
and committments. Mach organization representative had an opportunity to
report.
The League of WomegsVoter9 plans to update Pitkin' s Storf Re din
Government. The Craftsmen plan a workday on the common. The annapowitt
Players will produce an original one-act play, on local theme, to be written
by Rarold Bond and research by Mrs. Bond. Mrs. Barclay offered any needed
assistance with historical background.
Possible events suggested for Festival weekend in '76 included
country dancing, with costumes, public church suppers, an antique show,
exhibits.
The Rotary Lions, Kiwanis and Jaycee groups suggest joining
�,ither in a big unction of some sort.
Interest is evident for the subject of bike trails, possibly
coordinated with other towns. A handbook for procedures for establishing
a trail is to be issued shortly. North Reading has expressed Interest
In a tie-in or joint program with Reading. We have heard of no Bicentennial
activity in Wakefield to date.

Mrs. Barclay reported on the topic of/oral history program , its
possiblitiss and its requirements. This could be participated in by groups
or by individuals. 8d Palmer was suggested as a good resource person, and
High School equipment possibly could be made available. A number of interviewee:
were named. A bank of local history tapes would be a valuable asset to the
local history sources.
It was emphasized that any town funds to be included in the July
1975 budget must be planned for, itemized and ready for the Finance Gommitt®am
by December 1974.
The chairman thanked all present for their participation, and
announced that the Commission members would meet ' igain the first week in
May.
