The Commission members met at the Reading Public Library on
January 319 at 8 p.m.
The minut of the previous meeting were accepted as distributed.
Linda has informed the chairman that she finds herself
unable to take active part in the Commission and so is resigning.
Mrs. Ebeling will consult with Mr. Kelly for a High School nominee to
present to the Board of Selectmen for appointment in her stead.
Mrs. Miller has obtained the name of the person in charge of Lowell' s
bike trail project, but has not yet succeeded in making contact.
Contributions are coming in slowly, but steadily, with the current
total $1035. The lists includes individuals businesses, and organizations
with contributions rarGLng from 5 to 250 doliars. The secretary will
send individual acknow111ledgements to all donors, expressing appreciation
of their support.
The matching grant application for $6000 for completion of basic
repairs to the Parker Tavern has been completed.
Mrs. Ebeling reported that the student group working on the
Revolutionary period house project had drawn up ideas for a descriptive
brochure and had discussed feasibility and printing problems with Mr.
Morang of the Chronicle. They will meet with Mrs. Bishop to clarify
names and dates to be used for the individual houses.
Since the grant awards will not be made known before April the
Commission presently favors making a report of progress to the Town Meeting
in March, moving indefinite postponement of the funding article, and coming
with a definite request at the May special meeting instead.
Mrs. Celehar reported her contacts with Batten Brothers and brought
both samples and prices for markers. The brown plexiglas, matte finish,
with 1 3/4 inch letters on a 10 x 16 inch sign to be mountedon wood,
appeared to be the most suitable. The cost will be about $35.00 depending
upon the number of letters involved.
Mrs. Miller contacted Mr. Vik who suggested the McCann Bronze Co.
The charge for bronze would be .50 a square inch (about $80), and aluminum
about $55 @ •36 per square inch, both more expensive, and requiring
periodic cleaning.
John McCauley asked about the various types of house sidiAgto be
encountered and Mrs. Barclay made an appointment to drive him on an
inspection tour after which he would talk further with Batten Bros. ,
and ask especially about free-standing markers as well.
Mr. McCauley commented briefly on the Amherst meeting of January 26,
and reported that the $40 000 awarded in matching grants }ast summer
has not yet been delivered.
The Commission agreed to meet again, same time, same place, on
Thursday, February 14th.
