July 25, 1930.
The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works was held
this day at 7:30 P.M.
All four members and the Superintendent were present.
The records of the previous meeting were read and approved.
A letter was r4ceived from Mr. Albert E. Robinson, 215 Lowell
Street, objecting to an excessive charge for water. Board voted
to charge minimum $3.00.
A letter was received from Mr. Spencer, Chairman of the
School Board, with regard to assistance from our Highway Department
in repairing Drives , Walks, and so forth. Mr. Safford, their
Superintendent has been notified that the Board voted to do the
work requested.
The Playground Equipment Company Incorporated notified us of ,
a delay in shipment of the Jungle jym. It is to be shipped July 24
of 25.
The Reading Custom Laundry wrote complaining of condition of
John Street in front of No. 80. Conditions to be remedied.
A letter was received from Max Pineau, Libby Ave. , asking for
sewer or drain. Superintendent to answer that as Libby Avenue is
not accepted nothing can be done.
The question of installing meter at Pumping Station laid on
table until next meeting.
The condition of the Willow Street Rail Road Crossing was
discussed.
Mr. George Ida appeared relative to the condition of the '
sidewalk at the corner of Wilson and Pleasant Streets. Asked
that it be remedied and that crushed stone be put on from
John Street down.

' Mr. Torkington appeared, asking if Board had reconsidered its
decision and was informed that it had not.
The New England Telephone & Telegraph Company petitioned for
location for three (3) new poles on Weston Road between Hanscom
Avenue and Edgewood Avenue; for five ( 5) poles on Bancroft Avenue
northerly from Tower Road; for eight (8) poles on Hanscom Avenue
northerly from Weston Road. Approved and signed by Board.
The Wall and Sidewalk at #71 Hopkins Street is reported to
be on private land; to be investigated.
Petition of the Malden & Melrose Gas Company for location
for mains on Fair Road off Salem Street granted.
Band Stand and Memorial Park condition discussed.
The Board voted that all orders or requisitions be confirmed
by the Board before being executed or purchased.
A Report has been received from the Superintendent on the
progress of the work on Salem Street and that the Standpipe
connection will be completed in one week.

Mr. Caputo of the Saugus Sand And Slone Corporation met '
Mr. Hartshorn, Mr. Merrill and Mr. Fairclough in The Square after
the meeting adjourned and protested the action of the Board in
discontinuing their contract, which was to furnish No. 1 crushed
stone for $1.45 per ton.
On Monday morning, July 2, Mr. Birnie notified Mr. Lumbert
that he was receiving tailings and not No. 1 stone; Mr. Lumbert
notified the Saugus Corporation that he must have No! 1 stone
according to contract. Tailings continued to come all the afternoon
and started also on Tuesday morning, at which time Mr. Lumbert
stopped their delivery.
On Wednesday the Winchester Company was asked to furnish
stone, which has been satisfactory. '
Mr. Caputo, who admitted that he was away at the time, was
informed of these facts and that the Board approved of the action
taken. He threatened an injunction.
Mr. Hartshorn, Mr. Merrill and Mr. Fairclough, forming a
three-member Board, went to the Salem Street construction to
interview Mr. Birnie and to see what they could of stone, and so
forth, at 9:30 P.M.
After an inspection, they reconvened at 10:30 P .M. with the - -
Superintendent present and voted to continue taking stone from the
Winchester Company and adjourned immediately after.
