The regular meeting of the B. of P. W. was held this evening at
7:30 P.M. Mr. Hartshorn and Mr. Merrill were the only members present.
Petition from the Bd. of Cemetery Trustees to hold a hearing '
to change name of that portion of Forest. , from Main to thi
Cemetary, to Forest Glen Road.
The School Committee requested that we assist them in rebuilding
driveways etc. at the Lowell St. , Highland and High School. They
paying us the cost incurred. Voted to do so.
Letter received from Metcalf and Eddy relative to our inquiry
as to the cost of the supervision of the building of the standpipe.
They request that we allow them a few days time to enable them to
give us an approximate cost. Our chairman checked entire subject
with our Town Counsel, Mr. Samuel H. Davis, and he agreed with the
Board impression and understanding, namely:- that approx. cost of
water test would be in the neighborhood of $4000.00 to $5000:00. , Pnd
that the cost of an ordinary standpipe would be approx. from it5ONOO
to $800.00.
A Mr. Porter submitted a price of $200.00 to repair the Band
stand according to specifications as follows:- new sills and floor
timbers where found necessary, new floor, railing and steps,
reshingling roof using heavy 3 to 1 strip shingles laid with gal.
naild, repainting entire structure. Furnsihing necessary labor
and materials to put stand in first class shape and to start work
at once.
Sidewalk cost on High St. construction reported to be $1.91
per sq. yd. There was approx. 500 sq. yds in the job. Stated
that the execessive excavation in the job run up the cost 20%.
We have spent Approx. $1000.00 leaving a balance of $7.000.00 for
this work. Voted to consider laying out additional work of this kind.
Voted to place suitable grass lawn around town buildings also
to seed this lawn and one place on High St. abutting new sidewalk.
Voted to place as much curbing as found necessary on either
side of the Mt. Vernon St. entrance to High St.
Gas location approved for M. & M. Gass Co. on Fair Rd.
Poles locations hearing on Bancroft Ave. Hanscom Ave. & Weston
Rd. approved. Three abutters on Hanscom Ave. appeared in favor of
layout submitted.
That the electric light pAle on Woodbine St. opposite Call
bungalow be removed from the middle of sidewalk to its proper location.
Our Supt. instructed to obtain cost prices to plow, harrow and
seed the Meadow section of I'lemorial Park. and to proceed with this '
work. $2500 left to be expended.
Expect'. to start sewer construction on Bancroft Ave. in two
weeks time at latest.
Expect to start drilling and removing the ledges found on
Forest St. job inside of two weeks.

The purchase of a cement mixer laid on table because of
absence of a third member. The opinion of members present that
it would be cheaper to rent one for the work this year because
' we have been obliged to buy considerable new equipment.
Water test pumping has been purposely cut down to 65 gals.
per minute. Test wells still standing up and quality of water
contains less than 1/3 of the hardness that present supply.
Voted to continue pumping.
The records of meetings of Julyllth and July 16th were read
and the following ommissions were noted.
That our Supt. be instructed to take his vacation as follows,
one week in August and one in September when he found work in
such order that he could safely leave. That he would be on the
job at all othertimes . That he instruct the ordinary workmen, not
the heads of the different depts . , before the start of a new year
that they must take their annual vacation at a time when the work
would best permit.
That the purchasing of road materials and any other labor or
supplies be made in- the future only with the consent and knowledge
of the Board members . That as far as possible all purchases be placed
out at bids at the discretion of the Board. That the Supt discontinue
his present practice of buying road materials, but instead supply
the Board a complete program of the work intended.
