HomeMy WebLinkAbout1930-05-29 Board of Public Works Minutes -1- May 29, 1930 The weekly meeting of the Board of Public Works was held ' this day, Thursday, at 9:30 P.M. All four members and the Superintendent were present. Previous records read and approved. Mr. Trevor, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen, appeared and asked the cooperation of the Board for the Tercentenary Celebration. He asked that the grounds about the new standpipe location be kept as clean of debris as possible. Also that South and Hopkins Streets be made as passable as possible and that the dump be cleared and posted. The Engineers, Metcalf & Eddy, failed to advertise the bids for the standpipe and foundation also valve chamber for old standpipe. Therefore, new bids are to be received and opened on Tuesday, June , 3, 1930 at 8 P.M. A letter from Mr. Davis was received re. easement for drainage thru property of Priscilla T. Davis on Vine St. Board so voted and signed taking. A letter was received from Mr. Arthur D. Gordon, denying that public had obtained prescriptive rights on strip of his land in front of his store. Mr. Arthur H. Cook wrote re. Weston Road between Winthrop Ave. and Hanscom Ave. Supt. is to investigate and report with regard to laying out of same. The Superintendent advised that the removal of fence on common surrounding boulder and recommended that a curbing be placed about , it instead. He is to inquire of the Selectmen as to its advisabil- ity and report. The filling of Birch Meadow is progressing well and Mr. Putnam thinks that more material may be available from Salem St. May 29, 1930. Cont. Mrs . Iverson appeared at the hearing for new locations for poles on Grove St. from Wilmington South and favors the granting of the petition, providing that poles do not obstruct driveways. The Board considered Mr. Torkington's request and instructed the Superintendent to write to him, informing him of its decision. A Hearing was held on the petition for location of one (1) new pole on Prospect St. from Woburn North-west 388 ft. more or less. Also for the removal of one (1) pole of the Municipal Light Dept'. . Mr. C. F. Leavitt, 27 Prospect St. appeared and had no objection if the position of the light is not moved. Petition granted. A Hearing for the location of five ( 5) new poles on Grove St. South from the Reading-Wilmington Line and the Petition granted. The Board approved the location of a gas main in Perkins Ave. ' for the Malden and Melrose Gas Light Co. A report dated May 16, 1930, from Weston & Sampson on water analyses read and found very satisfactory. Mr. Davis reported that the Board had no legal right to continue to pay Mr. Geo. D. Putnam's salary. The only thing that may be done is to petition the Town in Town Meeting for a. pension, which could date back to the time the salary stopped. Mr. Lumbert is to talk with Mr. Putnam and to explain the conditions. The Board adjourned at 9 P.M. A True Record: ' Attest: William T. Fairclough SECRETARY
