Carol Grimm, Chair of CIAS, Jim Keigley, FINCOM Chair, Jim Francis, and
Catherine Martin met Dr. Hartunian at the Barrows elementary school. There we
were met by the principal, architect, and the chairpersons of the school's PTO.
The renovation plans were reviewed as well as the plans for the construction of
a new elementary school in the Dividence Road area. The new school, as
presented, would have a projected enrollment of 425 students but the core
facilities would be sized to allow for the construction of additional classroom to
accommodate another 100 students at a later date if so needed.
The Barrows renovation would include a new gymnasium, the conversion of the
existing gym to library space, six new classrooms and an elevator. The portable
classrooms would be removed or used for storage space.
The group then visited the Killam elementary school, and were also greeted
there by the principal and PTO chairs. The open space plan of this school does
not easily allow for the needs of smaller groups for specialized education plans.
A renovation plan for this school has not yet been prepared.
