HomeMy WebLinkAbout1930-03-28 Board of Public Works Minutes -1- March 28, 1930 A Meeting of the Board of Public Works was held at 7:30 P.M. Present were: Mr. Hartshorn, Mr. Merrill, Mr. Putnam, Mr. Fairclough, and the Superintendent. Mr. Ambrose delivered the options on Birch Meadow and suggested that they be referred to the Town Counsel for immediate action. He advised that deeds be signed by Mrs . Sweetser and Mrs . Adams just as soon as possible because of their advanced age. Also that Mrs . Emerson be interviewed with regard to purchase of her land and Mr. Weston about his land. Mr. Harry G. Porch, a resident of Reading, appeared relative to the purchase of Lukens Steel for the new standpipe. He stated that the present standpipe consists of Lukens Steel and felt that the Town could make no mistake in using his steel and assured the ' Board that although there was no better steel, it would cost the Town no more than any other. He asked permission to consult Metcalf and Eddy with regard to the matter and was advised to do so. The Motor Oil ouestion was brought up again and the Supt. said that he had bought Quaker State Oil from Stembridge at 84¢ per gallon. The Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Safford, asked that the High School Foot Ball Team be given the privilege of practicing on Memorial Park afternoons other than Saturday. The Board granted the request and instructed the Supt. to write to Mr. Safford, quoting the terms as in his request. The test wells were reported on and three new wells have been driven. Well #20 showed 36 gallons per minute, #21 driven 36 feet 21 gallons , #22 driven 32 feet 40 gallons. Excellent water much better than the present supply is being obtained. On the recommendation of the Town Counsel two voted were signed relative to the Bear riill property (see votes attached hereto) -2- March 28 Cont. A permit was granted to the Comm. of Mass. to lay drain across Cross St. to connect with ditch to carry surface water from the State Highway. Bids for the purchase of a motor truck were opened. The Superintendent was instructed to tabulate same for comparison next Friday night. The agreement for purchase of the gravel pit is reported ready. Mr. Everett W. Brown, 94 John St. , requested that the sewer be extended from Green St. to his property, so that he might connect. He was given an application to sign. The Superintendent reported on the Salem And John Street Drain. The application of Morris Levine for sewer in Bancroft Ave. was received. Hearing to April 11, 1930. Another application for Pleasant St. from between Middle St. , and foot of the hill, near property of Thomas G. Van Horn signed by W. Homer Morrison at al. Action on Sewer Assessments on Elliot St. postponed until full Board is present. The Board adjourned at 9:30 P.M. A True Record: Attest: William T. L C 0 P Y I THE COMMOTRIEALTII ' OF MASSACHUSETTS TOWN OF READING Permission is hereby granted to the Commonwealth of Massa- chusetts, through its Department of Public Works, to construct a drain across a town way known as Cross Street, situated on the easterly side of the State highway in the town of Reading about opposite station 38-401 to discharge water from said State highway into said drain and across said town way, and to enter upon said town way at any time for. the purpose of con- structing, repairing and maintaining said drain, the proposed location thereof being as shown on a plan drawn by A. W. Dean, Chief Engineer, dated October 31, 1929, and entitled: "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works Town of Reading Plan of Proposed Drainage System and Outlet About Sta. 38-40 on 1899 State Highway Layout" .
