HomeMy WebLinkAbout1929-05-17 Board of Public Works Minutes Reading, Mass. ' - May 17, 1929 A Meeting of the Board of Public Works was held this day at 7:30 P.M. Present were: Samuel H. Davis Miles C. Higgins Martin B. Hartshorn Wm. T. Fairclough Harold W. Putnam and the Superintendent The resignation of the Superintendent Harry B. Collins was received and read. With regret and reluctance the Board accepted the resignation to take effect May 31,1929, and the Chairman was delegated to write a letter of recommendation for his use. 8. letter from F. A. Barbour, Consulting Engineer, was received stating that he had notified Vinoent Russo, Drainage contractor to start the High Street drain at once. Mr. & Mrs. F. J. Torre met with the Board to ascertain if there had not been neglect on the part of Town employees as a hydrant near their store seamed to be defective recently when a fire occurred in their store. The records of the department showed that the hydrant in question had been tested on May 11th and found to be in good condition and therefore the fault must lie in thecperation of the Hydrant by the fire department. An application was received from Mabel H. Lewis for a curb at the corner of Green St. ,and Ash Ste, and it was voted to , install same. A letter was received from F. A. Smith Chief Engineer of Sewerage ' Division, Met. Dist. Comm, calling our attention to excessive pumpage at 'their station pumping Reading sewerage. It was felt by the Board that this was due in part to high level of Lake Quanapowitt being maintained, _l- and he was so advised. A hearing on the layout of Lawrence Road was held by the , Board of Survey. No one appeared and the matter was held in abeyance. Permission was granted to the Malden & Melrose Gas Light Co. to extend their main on Lowell St, from High to Grove St. Etta F. Pierce of Prescott St. , appeared before the Board and asked if anithing could be done about a dump on Willow St. , It was voted to clean the brook which has been partially blocked and to ask the police to prevent dumping at this location. An easement for drainage was executed by George D. and Flora M. McPhail. _ Three applications were received for the positions of Supt. for the Board and it was voted to hold a special meeting on Tuesday,May 21st at 7:30 P.M. for the purpose of interviewing these and any other can- idates.
