HomeMy WebLinkAbout1927-11-19 Board of Public Works Minutes November 19, 1927. Meeting of the Board of Public Works was held this day at the Town ' Building at seven-thirty P.M. There were present:- John W. Owen, Miles C. Higgins Chester J. Wallace Harry N. Brown _ Samuel H. Davis, and the Superintendent. Mr. Herbert Hunt and Joseph Nyman, representing the Reading Rotary Club came before the Board reouesting permission to erect a sign in Reading Souare, preferably on the Common, and they were advised to write a letter to the Board making application for a location and the Board would then consider the same. Mr. Cann discussed with the Board the matter of the condition of his Premises on North Main Street and the course which should ' be adopted to prevent the water from settling on his property and flowing, onto the adjoining property of Mr. Olsen, and it was decided to take the matter up with the State and request that the necessary action be taken to improve this condition. Mr. Maggi appeared before the Board complaining of the water coming into a cellar that he had recently dug on a lot of land on Copeland Avenue near Woburn Street, and also with reference to the storm water drain running, through said lot, and he was informed that the Board would look into the matter and advise him later what could be done to relieve the situation. The Board voted to purchase a Fordson Tractor with Sargent Plow, costing $1610.00 and to pay for the same from the Highway Appropriation. ' The Board voted to construct a storm water drain on Tower Road and Hanscom Avenue, and pay for the same for the Maintenance of Storm Drains Appropriation. A'-True Record:- Samuel H. Higgins Chester J. Wallace Harry N. Brown Samuel H. Davis, and the Superintendent. A letter was received from the Rotary Club reeuesting permission to erect a Rotary sign on the illuminated Reading sign at the south end of the Common and the club was notified that the Board would not deem it advisable to grant permission to erect a sign on this location and suggested that a separate post be constructed for the sign and then application be made to the Board for another location on or near the common. A letter from Maxime Pinean was received asking the Town to ' construct a drain aoross Salem Street near Libby Avenue and the matter was referred to the Superintendent for investigation and report. Mr. Edward E. Randall came before the Board with reference to the condition of South Street, and the Board instructed the Superintendent to put in two or three more loads of gravel in order to improve this highway. The petitions of the Municipal Light Department for relocation of a pole on Woburn Street and the location of two poles and removal of one pole on Ash Street, near the Boston & Maine Railroad crossing and the location of two poles on Gardner Road southerly from Ide Street, were granted by the Board.
