HomeMy WebLinkAbout1926-08-13 Board of Public Works Minutes MEETING OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS Aug. 13, 1926 Present: Mr. Owen, Mr. Booth, Mr. Hobbs, Mr. Carter and the Supt. The certificate granting the Edison Electric Illuminating Co, of Boston, their location on Main, Avon and Ash Sts . was signed by the Board. Also the tracings showing the exact locations of the conduit. A relocation of a pole on Elliott St. was granted to the Municipal Dept. Two point locations between the Municipal Light and the N.E. TEL. & TEL. CO. were granted, one for a pole on Bancroft Ave. north of Lowell, another on Highland St. west side; opposite the property lines of Horton & Stewart. Captain Gray of the Municipal Light Dept. conferred with the Board in relation to the bad condition of his street, Middlesex Ave. , between High and Vine Sts. He was informed that this year there were no available funds but that the proposition would be taken up early next year. The Supt. handed in an extensive Highway financial report with recommendations for work to carry the Highway Dept. through into the month of October. It was O.K'd by the Board. Due to the nine applications for water services received from the old Fair Grounds off Salem St. , an estimate for constructing a water main in this section was handed in by the Supt. It was approved by the Board with instructions to install with and in the order of other applications on file. The Supt. handed in other samples of sand from the Wakefield and Zanni pits. He was instructed to use that from Zanni's for fill over the Forest St. water main which during the process of opening up will determine the amount of available material which might he of use for the Highway Dept. maintenance work. The Supt. was also instructed to figure up the cost of con- structing the west side of the Square with bituminous macadam. Also the drainage system up So: Main St. from the brook to take care of storm water. This request was desired for the Board for next year's program. Mr. Currell, member of the Selectmen, asked the Board if the Highway Dept. would move the beacon at the ,junction of Woburn and Chute Sts . , down to the corner of Woburn and High Sts . , placing same at the intersections of the center lines. A petition was received from inhabitants from Hopkins St. , east of South Main St. , to have the street shaped up. Said petition , was answered by the chairman to theeffectthat repairs were on the program to be done within a week or ten days. A letter was received from Mr. Fred Sabine, District Engineer Dept. of Public Works, State House, in regard to the drainage situation on Prescott St. , south of the new concrete culvert. The Chairman ans- wered the lettertothe effect of shortening the construction of the width of Prescott St. five feet, and that said drainage would be taken care of next year.
