HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019-02-13 Climate Advisory Committee Minutes Town of Reading $ Meeting Minutes RECEIVED is TOWN CLERK READING, kW Board - Committee - Commission - Council: 2819 JUL - I PM 12: 38 Climate Advisory Committee Date: 2019-02-13 Time: 7:00 PM Building: Reading Town Hall Location: Lower Level Conference Room Address: 16 Lowell Street Purpose: Bi-monthly meeting Attendees: Members - Present: David Zeek, chair; Ray Porter, secretary; Laurie Ann Sylvia, member; Celeste Kracke, member; Gina Snyder, associate member; Jeff Everson, associate member Members - Not Present: Gretchen Latowsky, member; Others Present: Betsy Schneider, Denise McCarthy Minutes Respectfully Submitted By: Ray Porter Topics of Discussion: Welcome to Members and Guests Review minutes, vote on acceptance Minutes for 1/23/2019 accepted as amended Ongoing Business: • Bicycle Recycling Event • Tentative date May 4, 2019 • Need to confirm availability of Brian at RMLD • Need to complete insurance rider for the date of the event • Promote EV Charging Stations • Grants to Reduce Vehicle Air Emissions available • Will not pursue submitting a grant application at this time. • Clean Energy Strategy • Role of the Committee in supporting RMLD • Goal to increase the renewable energy composition of RMLD's energy supply • Invite Chuck Underhill or someone from RMLD to talk about energy portfolio choices. • Ask Andy Friedmann to confirm that this would be part of our mission • MCAN Score Card • Movie nights discussion • "No Impact Man" movie night at library • Double room for Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 6:15 to 8:45pm Page 1 1 Town of Reading-Meeting Minutes • Be prepared to address questions and read audience response • Distribute a handout with a list of resources from the film, or send out something via email (have a signup sheet) • Post a link on Facebook after the show • Fee requested with an amount to be determined by us. • Goal: To adopt more choices about reducing carbon footprint • Last Chance for Real • Ron D'Addario discussion on Climate Change • March 5, at 7:00pm at Reading Public Library • Cross promote through our committee • Group Discussion on Carbon Tax • Discuss proposed Real Estate tax to provide mitigation from climate change • Discuss proposed legislation to impose a carbon tax with revenues to go to various energy efficiency and redistribution programs. • Ideas for Arbor Day 2019 • Have a contest for the 51h graders to determine which school won. • Benefits that trees give us, through the Library during vacation breaks. • Propose to work with KC Latham of Rotary Club does the promotion and coordinates with the Tree Warden (Mike Hannaford), for distribution of trees with 5'h graders. Arbor Day (4/26/2019) • To provide guidance on how to "plant" the bare root tree in a pot. • Gina to talk with Jane about planting a tree on Earth Day • Winter Social • Mandarin Reading, Wednesday, March 6, 6:30pm • Send Save-the-date to the Friends of Reading Climate Committee.
