' Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7: 30 P.M.
in Room 16, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman White, Secretary Florence, Board
Members Cochrane, Watt and Hodgkins and Superintendent Louanis.
Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.
The Board reviewed bid received on May 27 for One ( 1 )
New Multi-Purpose Front End Loader to be used at the Incinerator.
Brodie Industrial Trucks, Inc. was the only bidder in the amount
of $14,747.00. The Board discussed the lack of competitive bid-
ding. Mr. Watt moved, Mr . Hodgkins seconded and it was voted to
purchase One ( 1 ) New Melroe Bobcat Model M970 from Brodie In-.
dustrial Trucks, Inc. in the amount of $14,747.00.
The Board reviewed bids received on May 27 for Paper
Refuse Sacks as follows:
Union Camp Corporation $89.30 per 1 ,000
Carter Rice Storrs & Bement, Inc. 97.00
Hudson Pulp & Paper Corporation 98.00 "
The Dowd Company, Inc. 120.75
Mr . Carlson, representing Union Camp Corporation, appeared and
briefed the Board on his product. It was agreed that a comparison
of the sacks of the two lowest bidders would be made before any de-
cision is reached.
The Board convened in Room 2 where a Public Hearing was
held regarding the petition of the New England Telephone & Telegraph
' Company to lay underground conduit in the following locations:
' The Board reconvened in Room 16, Town Building.
Mr. Cochrane moved that the Department proceed with the
installation of sidewalks on the West side of Haverhill Street
(Charles Street to #444) , and on the West side of Sumner Avenue
(Hopkins Street to Pennsylvania Avenue) and exclude the West side
of Charles Street (#202 to Wakefield Street) ; Mr . Watt seconded
and it was voted.
Read letter from Douglas E. Poole, Chairman, Tennyson
Club, requesting permission to block off and occupy Tennyson Road
from 1 :00 P.M. to 11 :00 P.M. on Saturday, June 19, for the purpose
of holding their annual cookout; rain date June 26. Mr. Watt moved,
Mr. Cochrane seconded and it was voted that permission be granted
' but it does not include the authority to serve liquor within the
limits of the public way.
It was agreed that the Board would meet during the summer
on June 21 , July 19 and August 16; other meetings at the call of
the Chair .
Mr. White discussed the inaccuracies in certain press
releases. It was agreed that if information were requested,copies
of the minutes would be given out.
Read letter from Mayor Edward F. Gill of Woburn regard-
ing the Town ' s interest in the recycling plant to be constructed in
that City. It was agreed that a letter would be sent to Mayor Gill
' stating that the Town of Reading 's Incinerator will be completed in
a few months; therefore, the Town has no interest.
