HomeMy WebLinkAbout1971-04-12 Board of Public Works Minutes April 12, 1971 Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7: 30 P.M. in Room 16, Municipal Building. Present were Chairman White, Secretary Florence, Board Members Cochrane, Hodgkins and Watt and Superintendent Louanis. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved as amended. The Board conferred with John Louanis, Pumping Station Engineer, who was severely beaten by two young men at approxi- mately 4: 30 P.M. , Saturday, June 10, as he was making a routine inspection of Well #15. The Board discussed in detail the use of a Walkie Talkie, more personnel , a trained dog, posting of water lands to vehicular traffic, and the barricading of access roads . It was agreed that the Board would go on record as backing the personnel 100%. Mr. Florence left to attend a meeting of the Parking Traffic Flow Committee. The Board conferred with Mrs. John Anderson and Miss Judy Haran regarding a recycling program as the Reading Conserva- tion Committee begins Earth Week. Mr . White reported on a meeting with Henry Paynter, Mrs . Anderson and Miss Haran on April 8. It was agreed that the Department would go along with the program and have a truck located in the Dump where the flattened, empty, used cans may be deposited. The Board adjourned temporarily at 8:05 P.M. to meet with the Board of Survey. The Board reconvened at 8:55 P.M. ' Read letter from John T. McHugh, Teacher, Social Studies Department, Parker Junior High School , requesting that a group of students from the American Credo Club be permitted to, use Reading Common from 12:00 Noon to 1 :00 P.M. on Monday, April 19, to demon- strate their appreciation for the American way of life. Mr. Cochrane moved, Mr. Watt seconded and it was voted that Mr.McHugh be advised that the Board has no objection to their use of the Common for the above stated purpose. Read letter from Richard A. Nihan, Jr. ,6 Hancock Street, regarding the overflowing sewerage manhole at the corner of Frank D. Tanner Drive and King Street; also, the Superintendent ' s com- ments in relation thereto. It was agreed that an 8-inch restric- tion at Hancock Street be eliminated by redesigning the drainage so that the 8-inch pipe may be replaced with a 12-inch sewer main. Read letters from Metcalf & Eddy, Inc. regarding the ' stamping of shop drawings by a Professional Engineer registered in Massachusetts, and comparison sheet for the Melroe M970 Bobcat Loader and the Waldon 5000 Loader which will be used for the Refuse Incinerator operation. it was agreed that specifications will be written around the Melroe M970 Bobcat. Letters were read from and to Combustion Engineering, Inc. regarding time extension. They were accepted as a point of information. Read note from the Superintendent regarding bids re- ceived on Cold Water Meters . According to Mr. Louanis, two of the seven companies bidding did not meet the specifications; therefore he recommended that the Department purchase meters from Rockwell Manufacturing Company, low bidder of the five qualified bidders . Mr. Cochrane moved, Mr. Hodgkins seconded and it was ,
