Meeting of the Board of Public Works opened at 7 : 30 P. M. in
Room 16, Municipal Building.
Present were Chairman Russell , Secretary Dustin, Board Mem-
bers Blood, Price and Botka and Superintendent Louanis.
Minutes of the previous meeting were accepted with correc-
tion.
Meeting adjourned temporarily in order that the Board could
meet as the Board of Survey and reconvened at 8: 15 P. M.
Read letter from Lowden, Inc. concerning the Ceratocide
Experiment and the diseased elm trees in Reading. It was accepted
as a point of information. It has been necessary to fell several
trees in the Common and the Superintendent noted the void caused
by the loss of the large elm at the apex of the Common and re-
quested suggestions from the Board as to how to replace the loss .
Mr. Botka volunteered to contact the Garden Club and request that
' they plant flowers in the area next Spring thus beautifying the
area.
Read letter from Arthur J. Reynolds, Jr. requesting informa-
tion relative to the possible reconstruction of Salem Street
together with copy of reply by the Superintendent. It was
accepted as a point of information.
Read copy of proposed letter to Tufts University endorsing
Mrs. Stasz as a candidate for the Tufts University Environmental
Fellows Program by the Board. Following a discussion it was
moved, seconded and voted to delete one paragraph and send the
letter to Tufts University over the Chairman 's signature.
The Superintendent presented a schedule suggesting that the
Solid Waste Receiving Area be open from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. for
the receipt of recycling materials on the following Saturdays:
October 4, 11 , 25, November 1 , 8, 15, 22, 29 and December 6, 13,
and 20, 1975. It was moved, seconded and voted to accept the
plan as presented by the Superintendent and further to publish
the schedule in the Reading Chronicle.
The Superintendent presented a second schedule suggesting ,
that the Solid Waste Receiving Area be open from 8:00 A. M. I
to 4:00 P. M. to the public for the disposal of leaves and
brush on the following Saturdays: October 4, 11 , 25, November
1 , 8, 15, 22, 29 and December 6, 13 and 20, 1975 It was
moved, seconded and voted to accept the schedule and publish a
notice in the Reading Chronicle.
It was moved, seconded and voted to continue the current
schedule, first and third Saturdays at the Solid Waste Disposal
site through until April and at that time to add the following
dates: April 10, 24, May 8, 22, 29 and June 12.
The proposed drain connection at 252 Haverhill Street
discussion was tabled until next week.
The Board, with the exception of Mr. Price who abstained,
reviewed the matter of the Master Drainage Plan for the Town.
Hoyle and Tanner requested that their presentation be recon- ,
sidered. A discussion ensued and it was moved, seconded and
voted to proceed with the interviews of the two firms chosen,
i .e. Whitman and Howard and Weston and Sampson and that we notify
the other interested parties of the Board 's decision. The vote:
4 in favor, Mr. Price abstained.
The Board reviewed the two articles prepared by the Super-
intendent for the Special Town Meeting on November 10, 1975•
It was moved, seconded and voted to submit the Articles as
prepared by the Superintendent. The Board also discussed items
to be reviewed with the Selectmen on September 22, 1975.
Read letter from the Office of the County Commissioners
notifying the Board of the annual hearing for Middlesex County
to be held Tuesday, September 30, 1975 at 10:00 A.M. in the
Hearing Room of the New Superior Courthouse in E. Cambridge, ,
and requesting a representative from the Board be present and
submit a written list of projects contemplated together with

estimated costs. It was moved, seconded and voted to comply with
the request.
The Board signed the following:
Contract 75-11 Roadway Reconstruction, Grove Street
Contract 75-1 Fuel Storage Facilities and Appurtenant Work
Payroll for the period ending September 14, 1975
Bill Roll dated September 19, 1975
