Members- Not Present: -_Joan Coco, Marilyn Shapleigh, Others Present: Minutes Respectfully Submitted.:By: Jayna Stafford Topics of Discussion: Call to Order: 6:32 by Thomas Procopio Acceptance of Minutes from 10116/17. Elder Services October Report,(Admin):Accepted. Financial October Report (Admin): Accepted. -MVES Report.(Jane Burns): In October, a Reading family (Mary and Drew Dolben)_had.a fundraiser for the MVES Gap Fund which raised $16,000: It was a lovely evening:with a jazz singer and light foods. Jane Burns attended to talk about the relationship between MVES and Reading. Old Business: :Dementia Friendly Reading Update:Jane and Brian attended the Dementia Friendly':' Massachusetts Conference on 11/9/17. There is a lot opportunity to,engage youth in the dementia.friendly initiative. The youth are our future doctors; entrepreneurs, care givers," and business owners. Preparing youth to deal with dementia-will serve our future populations better. In addition, the number of youth impacted by early onset Alzheimer's is: growing. The Alzheimer's Association is even setting up groups for youth. The DKJ Foundation kickoff for Dementia friendly Reading is 11/29/17.at 4:30,pm. Members of the COA.are encouraged to attend: Many,community partners are scheduled to- attend-including Police; Fire, Library, RMLD, two caregivers, Assistant Town Manager- clergy. .from First Baptist Church, Lisa Egan from the Chamber of Commerce, business owners, . banking industry, YMCA, and Jewish Family & Children's,Services. Jane practiced her speech Page i 1 _ with PowerPoint presentation for the DKJ kickoff. Members made suggestions about which slides to include and exclude. Guardianship Issues -.Review.of Sally Hoyt's Information: In the Massachusetts legislature, a very important amendment was passed yesterday. Anew bill established the Office of Guardianship. On a federal level, Elder.Abuse; protections were recently signed into law. Massachusetts is moving,forward,at a fast pace, Sally will keep the COA updated.., 25th Anniversary Planning: We will discuss this next month. Thanksgiving:Mea/De/ivery: :Christopher's donated the meals., Delivery-volunteers will meet up at 1:15 pm. Jane will be sending the routes tomorrow. Sandy, Tom, Pooja, Joan, and Margaret will be delivering 33 meals. Nine people passed away from the typical dinner -:delivery list.. No one from Sanborn is on the list. The Young'Woman's League will be . providing for.Sanborn residents for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Christmas Mea/De/ivery_ Fusilli's Cucina (in the former location of'Sam's Bistro) will be providing the meals at half price. The meal will be haddock or turkey and apple crisp. The: number of meals is still being finalized-. The final number will be somewhere between-20-35 .meals. These meals are for people with financial need but also available for people who need the goodwill or have a physical need. Senior Center staff works from multiple lists to make calls and evaluate residents' situations::Volunteers (Tom, John; Jolyn, Sandy,-and Jayna) will meet at 2 pm on.12%23/17.for meal-delivery. New Business: . Budget Meeting: There will be a town Budget meeting on -12/12/17.at 7:30 pm. Jane's ,position has increased to 24 hours. For FY19, there is a request to increase Jane's position. to.35 hours. Birthday cards: $250 previously came from the Burbank Fund but a small additional".amount is needed. Motion by Brian Snell to allow for $325 from the Burbank Fund for birthday cards. Seconded.by John Parsons. All in favor. Upcoming Events: Hillview Legislative Dinner had over 300. This year.barely 200 will attend. Jane and Sally discussed what time the event begins:and when the doors open. Staci Gruber of McLean Hospital will be speaking.at the Pleasant Street Center on 12/7/17 'at 1:30 pm on the science of medical marijuana. Adjourned:.Motion to adjourn by John Parsons.
