Date: 2018-05-31 Time: 7:00 PM Building: Reading Town Hall Location: Berger Room Address: '16 Lowell Street Session: Purpose: Version: Attendees: Members - Present: Barry Berman, Dan Ensminger - Members - Not Present: Others Present: Executive Assistant Caitlin Saunders - Minutes Respectfully Submitted By: Topics of Discussion: Dan Ensminger.called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Incumbent of the Recreation Committee Emily Sisson was first up this_evening. *She noted they are still working on the'Birch Meadow.Master.plan. She explained.,the softball field issue they had to deal with a couple weeks ago and noted there was some conversation about people who may have too much conflict being involved. Joyce Gould sits on the Animal Controls Appeal Committee. A committee that is rarely used in town as Joyce has yet to see a case come before them since joining. She noted she loves Reading-and animals and thinks responsible dog ownership is important and that's why she- joined this committee. She also travels a lot for work and doesn't.have time to be more involved at the moment. Neil Cohen is an incumbent currently on the Commissioner of Trust funds and would like to continue. They are responsible for controlling-multiple trust funds for the town including the .hospital fund and the cemetery fund. Michael Coltman is a new applicant wishing to volunteer on the Recreation Committee. He just retired and now has more time to be involved. He used to coach youth sports as well and he recently just got into pickle ball which seems to be growing heavily in town. Emmy Dove; an applicant for the Board of Health explained her background is in science (microbiology) and currently works at Harvard School of Public Health as an infectious disease researcher. She is in support of the pesticide regulations:the board is currently = trying to work on. She noted she would be interested in putting.together guidelines for the community for if a biotech or pharmaceutical company were to come to town. She also noted-she cannot do Tuesday's at 5:30, which is when the board currently meets. Margaret Havey, incumbent on the'Council on Aging, would like to continue her time. She likes delivering meals at the holidays. She noted Jane Burns does a wonderful job in the Page i 1 Elder Services department. She also mentioned how they have simply outgrown the senior center and would love more space: Thomas Procopio, also,an incumbent on the 'Cou'ncil on Aging, noted the study done on the Pleasant Street Center was wonderful. Simply stated, they need more space especially as the elder population continues to grow here in town. To him, access of services is a little concerning and should be looked at some more. . Pooja Parsons, another incumbent on the Council on Aging, noted.the 25th anniversary of the Pleasant Street Center is_coming up so they have been working on planning the day of activities for that. She noted she is sad to see Sharon (the PSC Coordinator) leaving as she does a wonderful job managing.the space to its full potential. . Debbie Small is a new applicant looking to also donate her time and help-to the Council on Aging. She currently works over at Artis Senior Living. She has lived in town for.over 30 . years and was a member of the Chamber of-Commerce also. She.believes it is important to support our seniors and she wants to help do that as much as possible. Jolyn Ek is an incumbent on the Council on Aging-. She is delighted the board is working on Alzheimer's initiative programs. -Her background is 30. years of social work. She likes the direction the board is going but also agrees with:everyone they need more space at the senior center. Barbara Carney.is a new applicant for the Council on Aging. She is new to Reading and looking to get involved. She was heavily involved with volunteering up in Maine where she moved from. She volunteered mostly in the library. She hopes to help with setting up some support programs for caregivers as well if she gets on the board. Last but not least, Marilyn Shapleigh is a current member of the Council on Aging wishing to continue. She hopes they can work on better getting information out to people in town on the services they offer. The VASC adiourned at 9:21 PM with a unanimous vote. Page 2
