Welcome/ announcements/ updates/ questions • Review Minutes • At the selectman's meeting Tuesday. night, they said the town needs to be more specific on how they're going to suffer and what improvements will be made if the override passes. II. Update on superintendent's budget proposal for 2018-2019 and potential middle level impact • Due to the budget cuts 6th grade ELA will no longer have a double block • 7th and 8th grade Foreign language will go away, it can still be taken in high school • Dr. Doherty is presenting a balanced budget but does not think it is a good budget • Last year the school committee pushed for an unbalanced budget because they didn't want to change the middle school model. • The message this year is it's a-revenue problem and not a position problem. It's not just about foreign language and ELA it's about the middle school model. Advisory, support and interventions will be effected If you don't have a child who attends a middle school you would think it's just one class, but it effects a lot more. • With less adults in the building there will be less supports. The middle school model is important to developing adolescents. • There was discussion about how the town hasn't had an override in over 14 years and some towns have one.every 7-10 years. • We will know by our next meeting if there will be an override and what the override will look like. Page i 1 • The parents that are present said their children have not brought up the budget cuts at home • If students want to get involved the biggest thing.they can do is talk to their parents, attend and speak at.a town meeting or a senior center. • Next meeting will be February 1St. Page i 2
