Topics of Discussion:
The fifth monthly meeting of the J.W. Killam Elementary School was held in the conference
room of the Killam Elementary School on January 8, 2018.
Call to order:
A quorum of members being present and the meeting having been duly convened at Killam
School by the Killam Principal, Sarah Leveque had called the meeting to order at 3:00 and
proceeded with business.
Review and Acceptance of Minutes:
Members reviewed draft minutes from the December meeting.
There being no further discussion, Ms. Leveque moved that the minutes for the month be
accepted as drafted.
New Business:
School Building Budget:
Mr Marragoni reported from the town meeting what the steps would be to have Killam
renovated. First step would be the feasibility study of the building. At this time the school
rating is a level 3. There is frustration among parents about the lack of communication from
last year.
School Budget:
The operating budget at Killam for next year is $86,000.
Town Budget:
Page 1 1
There is an $850,000 budget deficit between what the town is allocating to the schools and
what the schools projected costs will be.
Dr. Doherty will be presenting .2 proposed budgets at PTO, school council meetings, and
town meetings.
The vote will be on January 18.
The PTO will meet with Dr. Doherty after the January 18th meeting to discuss possible
override and implications.
Focus Area: MCAS:
As we move forward and look at MCAS results we look at our accountability rating (how we
perform against other districts in the state). Based on our accountability rating there is
different funding and eventually the state could take over if our scores do not improve.
We ended the meeting by looking at MCAS data from the previous year and looking at
specific questions and 'how we could incorporate this vocabulary in to our every day
teaching.
Adjournment
There being no further business, the School Council adjourned at 4:00 with plans to
reconvene on February 5, 2018 at 3:00 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Lauren Gramolini
