The seventh monthly meeting of the J.W. Killam Elementary School was held in the
conference room of the Killam Elementary School on April 3, 2017.
Call to order:
A quorum of members being present and the meeting having been duly convened at Killam
School by the Killam Principal, Sarah Leveque had called the meeting to order at 3:00 and
proceeded with business.
Review and Acceptance of Minutes:
Members reviewed draft minutes from the March 6th meeting.
There being no further discussion, Sarah Leveque moved that the minutes for the March 6th
meeting be accepted as drafted. Katie Cole seconded the motion. The members then voted
unanimously to approve the minutes.
Vote: Minutes Accepted 4-0-0
New Business: The WASH Committee is up and running with a main purpose of
consistency in regards to allergy guidelines. This committee will also be looking at
"Mindfulness" and how to build this practice into the student's daily life. Service
Squad/Student Council was discussed. Service Squad is open to fifth graders only;
nominated by teachers and partnered with mentor teachers. Currently there are 10
teachers and 10 students who have been nominated to earn leadership roles. Kindergarten
screening will begin this week. There are about 65 students enrolled in kindergarten for

next year. It was noted that a Standard Based Assessment for possible reading difficulties
will be mandated during kindergarten screening next year. MCAS testing will begin
Thursday.
Other: Next meeting Ms. Leveque will update the school budget as it is going before Town
Meeting and the town is waiting for final approval. The town is looking at a possible
override for next year. Administrators are looking at progress towards the School
Improvement Plan and the progress that has been made. Next year schools will be looking
at an updated reading benchmark system that is better aligned with current standards as
well as continued focus on Writer's Workshop and AMC math assessments. Discussion also
revolved around the possibility of having two different nights for the Learning Fair; a grade
K-2 night and a grade 3-5 night.

reconvene on May 1, 2017 at 3:00 pm.
