Topics of Discussion:
The meeting was called to order at 7:08pm.
1. Minutes from the meeting on April 3, 2017 were reviewed and approved.
2. Boy Scout Project
Corey Ward presented his Eagle Scout project idea for a Message Board in the Town
Forest. He proposed that on one side would be a large map of all Town Forest trails.
The other side could be for town use. Proposed locations: Strout Ave entrance, at the
compost entrance, or near the old treatment plant. We suggested that Corey take a
look at other kiosks in the Town Forest.
Projected completion is October 2017.
3. Bammer loan to Chelmsford
Tom Hennings came to ask if the bammer could be loaned to Chelmsford for a scout
project. We said yes to this request. We discussed that lending to other towns is
probably not a good idea as it may become difficult to get our tools back.
4. Walk Reading Weekend
Page 1 1
Ginny Blodgett came to confirm the details of the walks that will be led by Trails
Committee members. She also mentioned that there is a plant sale on the Common
on Saturday, May 20 that may help with more participation.
Jean: Town Forest trail walk at Wood End School on Sat. May 20 at 10am
Will: Kurchian Woods trail walk at Franklin St trailhead on Sat. May 20 at 12 noon
Dave: Birds Before Breakfast at Materra cabin on Sun. May 21 at lam
Tom: Bare Meadow trail walk from Materra cabin on Sun. May 21 at 1pm
5. Birds Before Breakfast
We discussed the logistics for the walk and breakfast.
Jean will bring coffee cake, plates, and napkins
Kim and Will will bring juice and fruit
Tom will bring the coffee (around 8:45am or so)
Kim reserved the cabin.
We should be there around 6:45am.
6. Board of Selectmen Meeting - May 30
Some of the new selectmen want to know what some of the committees do, Trails is
one of them. We need a Powerpoint presentation with pictures. Jean will put it
together and present at the meeting.
7. Trails Conference (Nov. 4, 2017)
If we are going to submit material to present at the conference in the fall, we need
to submit our topic by June 2. Topic suggestion is "Tips, Tricks, and Lessons Learned
as a Small Town Trails Committee". Kim will put something together.
8. Trash Barrel at Kurchian Woods trailheads
Tom will talk to DPW about putting trash barrels at the Kurchian Woods trailheads on
Franklin St. and Fairchild Dr. Hopefully, they will help reduce the amount of trash in
the woods.
9. Friends and Family Day - June 17, 2017
The event this year is in the Birch Meadow complex on June 17 from 10:30am until
3:00pm. Tom, Will, and Kim will be there.
Next Meeting: Tues, May 30 before the BoS meeting
The meeting was adjourned at 8:25pm.
