And I caused an attested copy of this warrant to be published
in the Reading Chronicle in the issue of June 10, 1948, the date
of posting being seven days prior to the date set for the meeting
in this warrant and the date of publication being more than one
day prior to said date of meeting.

The hour named in the warrant having arrived the Moderator,
Charles P. Howard, declared the meeting in order at 8 P.M. and
announced that, t'_�le regular Town Clerk being absent, it wauld be
necessary to elect a clerk to act at this meeting.
G. Lawrence itoberts nominated William E. Morrison to be
clerk of t7ie meeting. Charles E. Wilkinson seconded the nomination
and likewise moved that nominations be closed. It eras so voted
and on motion of Samuel H. Davis the 1oderator was instructed to
cast one ballot. He did so and declared that 'o_illiam J. Morison
was elected temporary Town Clerk.
Mr. Morrison then came forward and was sworn in by the
Moderator.
The Clerk then partially read the warrant when, on motion of
Charles E. 'v ilkinson it was voted that the further reading of the
warrant be dispensed with except for the officer's return; w%lich
was then read by the Clerk.
Article 3. On motion of Charles E. Wilkinson it was voted
to tkke up article 3.
Mr. Latham moved that the Board of Selectmen be and trey
hereby are authorized for and in behalf of the Town to convey or
abandon for the minimum sum of one hundred (100) dollars and upon
such further terms and conditions as they may determine the ease-
ment consisting, of a right of way for foot travel over a strip of
land approximately 8 feet in width running in a general Viesterly
direction from Taain Street to the Municipal Parking Area and
through land formerly of Enna I. Chamberlain and land now of
Aaron L. Levin and said Board of Selectmen are further authorized
to execute for and in behalf of the Town such conveyance or aban-
donment of such easement together with such other instruments and
agreements which may be necessary to carry out the purpose of this
vote.
A substitute motion by Mr. Hatfield that the subject matter
of Article 3 be postponed until recommendations could be received
from the Planning Hoard was defeated on a voice vote.
The original motion was defeated on a standing vote of 61
in the affirmative and 48 in the negative, a two thirds vote being
necessary to carry the measure.
Article 1. Louis Davis, Chairman of the Salary and Wage
Classification Committee, read a report of progress of the
committee.
On motion of G. Lawrence Roberts the report was.accepted
and placed on file.
Walter D. Berry, Chairman of the Plannin- Board, read tae

report and recommendations of the Planning Board with respect
to the proposed amendment to the Zoning By -Law.
Charles El. '►silk nson moved t' -tat the report be placed on
file. It was so Noted.
On motion of 1,1r. Wilkinson it was voted t'zat J'Irticle 1
be laid on the table.
Article 2. Lester W. Edwards moved that the Zoning By-
law and Zonin- Map of the 'down be and the sane iereby are amended
by changin the area hereinafter described from t'1e A -2 residence
district to tie business district:
Beginning on the East Orly side of Pearl Street at the
Northwesterly corner of the premises owned by Shirley
and ueorge R. Du"an, Jr., thence Easterly 200 feet
along the 14ortrierly boundary line of said Dugan's land;
thence turning and running Southerly by a line parallel
with and •200 feet distant from the Easterly boundary
line of Pearl Street to the Southerly boundary line of
the premises owned by t "le Town of treading, Pearl Street
School property;
thence turning and running Westerly along the Southerly
boundary line of.tne Pearl Street School premises 200
feet to the Easterly boundary line of Pearl Street;
and t ',fence turning and running Northerly along the
Easterly boundary line of Pearl Street to the point
of beginning
so that the above described area shall rye rezoned and changed
to and become part of the b>siness district.
'1'Zis motion was defeated by a vote of 2. in the affirmative
and 89 in, the negative.
Article 4. IE7dward C. Jmslie moved that; the sum of Fo,.ar
Hundred (400) Dollars be appropriated by transferring said sum
from the Garba, e Collection Ap propriat. - -i on bf _ 1948 for the purpose
of prosecuting or defending proceedings before tne Department of
Public Utilities relative to the price of g,as sold and delivered
in the Town of ReadinZ and the Town Accountant be and he hereby
is authorized and empowered to transfer said sum to carry out
tie purpose of this vote.
This motion was defeated by a vote of 42 in tie affirmative
and 53 in tae ne- ative.
Article 5. On motion of Clarence J. Stalliday it was
unanimously voted that the sum of One 1 1undred sixty dollars,
(:160.00) be appropriated under authority of Section 64 of
Chapter 44 of the "seneral Laws by transferrin_, said sum from t-ae
1948 Public Welfare General Aid Account for the payment of a
certain unpaid accountdue in 1947, covering professional medical
service for an individual aided by the 'gown, and that the To-,.::n
Accountant be and he hereby is authorized and empowered to transfer
said sum to carry out the purpose of tiis vote.
The vote was 101 in favor, none a?ainst.
Article 6. On motion of Boyd H. Stewart it eras voted that
article 6 be indefinitely postponed.
On motion of C-larins s. Wilkinson it was voted that Article
1 be taken from. t'_le table.
On motion of Mr. .Nilkinson it was voted that article 1 be
indefinitely postpon -d.
On motion of Mr. cuillkinson it was voted that the meeting
adjourn sine die.
