Board - Committee - Commission - Council: R: "� p 1: pg E Human Relations Advisory Committee �.� LI.� Date: 10 29 2015 Time: 7 pm Building: Reading Police Station Location: Community Room Address: 15 Union Street Purpose: Meeting Session: General Session Attendees: Members - Present: Linda Snow Dockser, Lynn Dornink, Mark Segalla, Kyung Yu, Susan Gaskell, Heather McLean Members - Not Present: Monique Grananman Others Present: Sherilla Lestrade, Ruthie Wilson, Christine Hansen, Katherine Grayson Minutes Respectfully Submitted By: Lynn Dornink Topics of Discussion: Opening discussion of difficulty /complexity of speaking out against racist statements made in public situations. Christine reported on handicapped symbol icon updates and Council on Aging programming. Discussed invite to Jason Cross and Metco parents to Dec 3 meeting to discuss MLK celebration. Sherilla has invited Metco parents to HRAC meetings without a great deal of success due to babysitting issues, distance to Reading, and late night meeting time. Committee agreed to offer activities for children of parents who may want to attend. Katherine and Ruthie offered to run these activities. Katherine and Ruthie led an activity on "Who I Am" for members Heather showed power point on HRAC communication and social media presence. She and Linda will present to Board of Selectman on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Mark stated that he would update HRAC Mission Statement on town web site. Mark motioned to accept presentation and Lynn seconded. The vote was 5 to 0 in favor. Discussed planning for MLK celebration. Suggestion to have a member of Muslim faith do the invocation. Would like a broader range of religious representation if possible. A sub- committee will meet to finalize MLK theme and begin discussing details. Mark Segalla had to leave meeting 8:20. Motion to approve 10 /1 minutes was moved by Heather, with Kyung seconding. Vote was 4 to 0 in favor of minutes. Discussed HRAC having a tree at Parker's Festival of Trees. Sherilla, Linda, and Lynn will work to put the tree together. Vote to get a tree and decorate was 4 to 0 in favor. Meeting adjourned at 8:35. Page i 1
