Location: Conference Room Purpose: Monthly Meeting for 2015 -16 School Year Attendees: Members - Present: Joanne King, Lynda Michel & Melissa Murphy Members - Not Present: Christine Daly, Caitlin Koehler Others Present: None Minutes Respectfully Submitted By: Joanne King Topics of Discussion: 5 UU IQ P 4: 31 The first monthly meeting of the 2015 -16 school year for Wood End Elementary School was held in the Conference Room on October 5, 2015. Call to order: A quorum of members being present and the meeting having been convened at Wood End School by Wood End Co- Chair, Joanne King, called the meeting to order at 3:20 and proceeded with business. New members were introduced and sign off sheets were collected. Public comment: Meetings for the Wood End School Council are open to members of the public and are posted in accordance with the requirements of the State Open Meeting Law. Mrs. King regularly advises parents in the Wood End community of upcoming School Council meetings in her regular weekly newsletter which is posted on Ed Line. No public comment Review and Acceptance of Minutes: Members reviewed draft minutes from the last meeting, which was held on May 4, 2015. There being no discussion, Mrs. King moved that the minutes be accepted as written. Melissa Murphy and Lynda Michel seconded the motion. The members then voted unanimously to approve the minutes. Vote: Minutes Accepted 3 -0 -0 Page 1 1 New Business: The School Council members elected Melissa Murphy as co -chair and Lynda Michel will serve as secretary for the 2015 -16 school year. A reminder that minutes must be submitted to the Town Clerk within 10 days of the meeting for posting. School Improvement Plan Mrs. King reviewed an initial draft of the school improvement plan for Wood End Elementary School with the Council members. For the next year, the school will focus on two goals: Goal 1 will address student support, wellness and safety and Goal 2 will address student learning and the implementation of the MA Curriculum Frameworks. The objective for Goal 1 is to implement a Multi- Tiered System of Support (MTSS) to address academic, social, and emotional needs of students, strengthening the social /emotional /behavioral health of all students. Some of the steps to achieve this goal include the use of coaches and the school -based Leadership Team to provide training and support for staff, use of research -based instruments to measure progress (SRSS and TFI), Mental Health First Aid training for all staff who work with students in Grades 4 -5, and establishing a process and protocols for the Student Support Team (SST) to improve collaboration and accuracy of referrals. Current data will be used to analyze grade -level trends and identify ways to support students. Open Circle curriculum will be taught with fidelity in all classes, K -5. The objective for Goal 2 is to implement the MA Curriculum Frameworks in Mathematics and Literacy in all classrooms, K -5. Some of the steps to achieve this goal include training all teachers in Writers Workshop and use coaches to model lessons, use the Units of Study to teach writing K -5, train all teachers in the effective use of the Fountas & Pinell Benchmark Assessments to determine accurate guided reading levels for all students, pilot the KnowAtom science curriculum in all grade 4 -5 classes and other selected classes, and use professional learning communities to collaborate and share best practices. Curriculum maps will also be posted online for all content areas to improve communication with families. There being no further discussion after the presentation, Mrs. King moved that the School Improvement Plan be accepted as written. Lynda Michel seconded the motion. The members then voted unanimously to approve the School Improvement Plan. Vote: SIP Plan Accepted 3 -0 -0 Budget Parent With the upcoming school budget talks about to begin, Mrs. King reminded the Council members that Wood End is in need of representation for the FY17 budget. Andrea Quirbach has served in this role for the past two years, but cannot continue. Lynda Michel served as a budget parent at Joshua Eaton two years ago and found the experience very informative. Mrs. King will post the information in her weekly newsletter looking for a new parent representative.
