On the way, time permitting, you can make brief visits to the beautiful NOTRE DAME DE QUEBEC CATHEDRAL and the serene interior courtyard at LE PETIT SEMINAIRE DE QUEBEC. 6:45 PM Arrive at LES TROIS GARQONS, a French-Canadian bistro in the heart of the Quartier Latin (where you will be introduced to the quintessentially Quebecois delicacy known as POUTINE). 8:00 PM After dinner, walk (OR TRANSFER DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER) to the PLAINS OF ABRAHAM for a visit to a unique, stone fortification that was erected in the mid- nineteenth century to protect Quebec City from an invasion from, of all places, America. 8:30 PM Arrive at MARTELLO TOWER TWO for an interesting, interactive lesson about military strategy of the era, and about the singularly harsh lives led by the soldiers stationed in the Martello Towers. 10:00 PM After your history lesson, transfer back to the hotel. 10:30 PM Overnight security services begin at 10:30pm. (IF THE WEATHER IS INCLEMENT, your group will visit the MUSEE DE LA CIVILISATION in place of the treasure hunt.) 11:30 AM The treasure hunt will end at the ASSEMBLEE NATIONALE, Quebec's provincial parliament building, from which you will walk to lunch on your own in the QUARTIER LATIN. After lunch you'll be free for picture-taking or souvenir shopping along rue St-Jean, in the Latin Quarter's many student-friendly shops and boutiques. 1:15 PM Meet the bus IN FRONT OF THE CHATEAU FRONTENAC and depart on a short ride along the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River(the COTE-DE-BEAUPRE) to the village of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre. 2:00 PM There, upon arrival in the village of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre, your guide will lead you on a tour of the magnificent STE-ANNE-DE-BEAUPRE BASILICA. This world-famous, gothic cathedral is renowned for its enormous proportions and superb stained glass windows. More than a million visitors tour the basilique every year. 2:45 PM Meet the bus and depart for Montmorency Falls. 3:15 PM Arrive at PARC DE LA CHUTES MONTMORENCY, where the first battle between Generals Wolfe and Montcalm took place during the epochal summer of 1759. There, you will walk across a footbridge that crosses directly over the top of the 83- meter high falls, then down a 250-foot staircase that's so close to the face of the falls that you'll feel the mist. WHATEVER YOU DO, be careful NOT TO GET SOAKED. It will be a long night in wet clothing, because you will not be back at the hotel until about 10:00pm. 4:30 PM Board the bus and depart for your evening at the cabane a surcre. TIME PERMITTING, you can stop en route to the sugar shack at CHUTES DE LA CHAUDIERE and walk across a swaying footbridge there. But remember, DON'T GET WET! 6:00 PM Arrive at LA CABANE A PIERRE where, after a tour of the sugar shacks and a hearty dinner of typical Quebecois fare (including Mountaineer's Pea Soup, Home-baked Country-style Bread, Sausages, Traditional Tourtiere, Maple-glazed Ham, Pancakes with Maple Syrup, Maple Taffy on Real Snow, Coffee Tea, Soft Drinks and Fresh Spring Water), you'll spend the evening learning traditional dances and folk songs. Your day will end with a sugar-on-snow party, with real maple syrup and real snow (stored in the winter and served every day of the year). 9:00 PM Board your bus at about 9:00pm and return to the hotel. 10:00 PM Overnight security services begin at 10:00pm. „";®fl ?x •,-4477-•-."ate' `@: v o _SA_ 7 -i- .:, .c .'v_.. .m`=1 :- w_.._ .. .a... :17737-4.- 75 7:00 AM Pack your bags and leave them just inside your hotel room door, where the bell staff who will pick them up (at 9:00am) and load them on your bus. Then, walk to the Musee du Fort for one last history lesson at 10:00am. 10:00 AM Arrive at the MUSEE DU FORT where you will learn about the many battles and skirmishes between the French, British and, yes, the American armies. The 45-minute presentation will end with a memorable and highly educational depiction of the decisive Battle of the Plains of Abraham, and a QUIZ to see how much history you absorbed. 10:45 AM After your quiz, walk with your guide to the QUARTIER PETIT CHAMPLAIN, the oldest part of the city, where you'll pause for lunch on your own (LE PETIT COCHON DINGUE would be a good choice for a good, affordable sandwich). Before or after lunch you'll be free for some last-minute gift-shopping and picture- taking as you browse amidst the ancient greystone buildings and narrow, cobblestoned streets that date back to the early 1600s. 12:15 PM Meet at the bust of Louis XIV and walk a few steps to the Centre d'Interpretatoin Place-Royale, in an historic graystone building at the edge of Place Royale. 12:30 PM Arrive at the CENTRE D'INTERPRETATION PLACE-ROYALE for a self-guided visit. Before you leave, you will learn about the people, houses and challenges of setting up on the shores of the St. Lawrence River in the early 1600's. 1:45 PM Meet the bus and begin your journey home to the United States. 9:45 PM Arrive at school at about 9:45pm (your actual arrival time may vary). 6/9/2015 Your Visit Canada Quebec City Trip Price Estimates Your Visit Canada Quebec City Trip Price Estimates Catherine Doyle [catherine @visitcanada.com] Sent; Monday,June 08, 2015 1:58 PM To: Doyon,Amanda Cc: VISIT CANADA(donovan @visitcanada.com] Attachments:"AVG certification".txt (158 B) ANADA Unparalleled Excellence in Educational Tours can a a Dear Amanda: Thank you for waiting for the price estimates for your field trip to Canada. Nature's Classroom is insured in the following manner: STUDENTS $2500 each accident/injury $ 750 each sickness "Injury" means bodily injury to the child resulting directly and independently of all other causes in loss from accident occurring during the child's stay at Nature's Classroom. "Sickness" means sickness or disease of a child which first manifests itself during the child's stay at Nature's Classroom. The policy does not cover the following: • pre-existing conditions. (For example: a child comes to Nature's Classroom with a cold; the cold worsens and medical attention is sought; payment would be the parent's responsibility.) • intentional, self-inflicted injury. • preventative medicines, vaccines,or medical examinations which are not necessary for the treatment of injury or sickness. • repair, replacement, examinations for prescriptions or fitting of eyeglasses, contact lenses, or hearing aids. • any dental work or treatment of natural teeth, cosmetic or plastic surgery not necessary for the repair or alleviation of injury. • the repair or replacement of existing dentures, partial dentures, braces, bridges, or other artificial dental restoration. • the repair or replacement of artificial limbs or orthopedic braces. NOTE: This policy does not cover visiting teachers and other adult supervisors. f OF RFAdi WALTER S. Educate yourself about the culture you're visiting. Before you jet off across the world,do a little research. How do they dress? What do they eat?How do they say'hello"?This will help you adjust to the new environment and keep you from looking like a tourist. X marks the spot.Be where you need to be when you need to be there.Always come prepared with local maps, essential phone numbers, and a watch,so it's easy for you to get to designated meeting spots on time,Scheduled activities are mandatory. If you need to be excused from an activity for any reason, please ask your group leader for permission in advance. Pay attention to your surroundings. In a new environment, there's a lot to take in,but you need to stay alert. Be mindful of your safety and belongings at all times,so that you can avoid any mishaps while traveling. Listen to your group leader and tour director.Your group leader is responsible for your safety, and your Explorica tour director is an expert in every aspect of your destination. It is important that you listen to them and do what they say at all times. This means getting places on time, respecting curfew, and following all rules in place,so everyone can have a fun and safe experience. O Organize your free time responsibly.Throughout your trip you'll have periods of free time.During this time, you should always be with a small group, and never stray too far from your meeting place.Be sure to wear a watch, carry a map,and allot plenty of time to get to your meeting place early,so the rest of your group doesn't Rhave to wait. Respect the people and the culture. When you travel, think of yourself as a guest in someone else's home. Even if foods, clothes,or behaviors seem strange to you,be understanding and accepting of the culture. 410 Illegal activities will not be tolerated. The laws abroad may be very different from the laws back home, but no matter how strange they may seem to you, follow them!If not,you are subject to the legal consequences and immediate dismissal from the tour. Consumption of hard alcohol will not be tolerated. We do not permit excessive drinking on our tours. The allowance of a glass of wine or beer at meals is up to the discretion of your group leader if you are over 18 and of legal drinking age in the country you are visiting. O Offer help and support to your peers, group leader and tour director. You're all in this together? Whether a friend needs a hand lifting a suitcase, your group leader needs to get everyone quiet to call roll,or your tour director needs help learning someone's name, lend a helping hand to whoever needs it. D Damages are your own personal responsibility. If you break it,you buy it.If you damage anything in your hotel or bus or incur any additional fees(e.g.phone calls, room service, etc.),you will be held responsible and required to pay for it.If you notice any damage upon arrival, notify your tour director immediately. Experience the world and have fun! These rules are in place to keep your entire group safe, healthy, and happy on tour. Now it's your job to get out there and enjoy the experience of a lifetime.Bon voyage! Parker Middle School has received a donation of equipment from Teradyne through the efforts of Brian Wadell, a Parker parent and Teradyne employee. Mr. Wadell has been working with Connie Quackenbush, grade 6 science teacher, to support the Parker science program. Teradyne has also been a supporter of the RMHS Robotics team. Teradyne would like to donate 8 oscilloscopes (valued at approximately$800.00 each)and one signal generator(valued at approximately$150.00). Please accept this donation for the benefit of the Parker science program. 1 Finigan, Diane To: Lyons, Douglas Subject: RE: Equipment Donation to Waves Program From: brian.wadeIk teradyne, com Imallto:brian.wadell@}teradyne.com] Sent:Wednesday, May 27, 2015 9:21 AM To: Lyons, Douglas Cc: Brian WadelI notes.teradvne.com; Quackenbush ,Connie Subject: Equipment Donation to Waves Program Mr. Lyons, Mrs. Quackenbush and I have been working on a donation of equipment to the Parker Middle School to support her "waves"curriculum by my company Teradyne, Inc. I am attaching a list of the equipment we would like to donate. The equipment consists of oscilloscopes and a signal generator. The(8)oscilloscopes are currently valued at around $800 each and the signal generator at $150. You may know Teradyne is also very active with the Robockets team at RMHS. Oscilloscopes are the go-to instrument used by engineers and scientists to probe and view waveforms. The signal generator can be used to generate a number of standard voltage waveforms(sine, square wave, triangle waves, etc.). Used together the students will be able to experiment with waves interactively. They can experience the sound of differing wave shapes, listen to concepts like frequency and amplitude, infrasonic, ultrasonic, etc. I am working out the donation details on my end—it needs to go through an approval committee. If this is acceptable could you please help with the paperwork on your end and let me know if you need any additional information? Thanks for the help. Regards, Brian C. Recommended Procedure A. Public Input(I) Chair Robinson called for public input. There was none. B. Reports Pagel 1 Students Ms.Nazzaro reported that class elections were held for next year's officers. She also reported that most of our sports are participating in post season play and the senior prom was last week culminating with graduation on Sunday. Liaisons Dr. Snow Dockser reported that the HRAC went before the Board of Selectman to ask the Board to reinstate the Human Relations Advisory Committee. The Selectmen were receptive and supportive. She has also attended three of the community forums and found them to be very informative with a good dialogue. The attendees are providing a lot of useful feedback. Dr. Doherty explained that he will compile the data he has gathered at these forums and present to the School Committee in the fall. There will also be additional forums in the fall with more detailed questions. As a parent of a senior, Dr. Snow Dockser took this opportunity to thank the administration, faculty and staff for all they do to provide quality educational experiences. Mrs. Webb reported on the National Spanish Honor Society ceremony being held this evening. Director of Student Services Mrs. Wilson reviewed the district's approach to providing Mental Health Services. The district has a system in place to address the social-emotional well- being of our students. Using student's 504 plans as well as the tools associated with the MTSS system, staff can be proactive and students can be successful. Dr. Doherty said that as part of the School Transformation Grant the district is required to report the status of the grant by July l st. Sara Burd will present on this grant at an upcoming School Committee meeting. Director of Finance Ms. Sybert reported that there is a slight delay in the permitting process for the Modular classrooms. The vendor will be meeting with the town Building Inspector tomorrow. Mr. Robinson asked how the delay will affect the project. Ms. Sybert said that Vanguard will update the schedule after that meeting. Mrs. Webb was startled by news of this delay. She wants to be assured that Vanguard stays on top of this project and that they are mindful that Town Hall is closed on Fridays. Assistant Superintendent Page 12 Mr. Martin reported on a workshop he and some of the team leaders attended and presented last week. It was a collaborative event with discussion around common measures. Mr.Nihan asked where we were in the hiring of the curriculum coaches. Mr. Martin shared that interviews have begun. Superintendent The Superintendent shared that Mrs. Patti Beckman has been named as the Associate Principal at the Birch Meadow School for the 2015-16 school year. Superintendent Doherty reviewed her qualifications and feels this will be a great fit. Mr. Sprung will work collaboratively throughout the year with Mrs. Beckman. C. New Business (out of order) RCASA Presentation—Vaping RCASA Director Erica McNamara introduced Maureen Buzby from the Mystic Valley Tobacco & Alcohol Program who will present information of"vaping". She provided a brief background of the Mystic Valley Tobacco & Alcohol Program saying she is the coordinator for 7 communities responsible for educating them on these products. She said that young people are not smoking traditional cigarettes as much but are using these products such as hookah pens, personalized vaporizers (PV or vapes) and e-hookahs instead. Manufacturers market them to make them attractive to young adults. "Vaping" is the new craze among adolescents. The use of vaping has been steadily increasing. Ms. Buzby defined what an e-cigarette is. An e-cigarette is a nicotine delivery device that is battery operated and is not regulated by state or federal laws. It contains no tobacco. Local communities are doing a better job regulating the access to these products. Reading is one of the few communities that require a person to be 21 to purchase these products. The risk associated with the use of these devices has yet to be determined. Nicotine is a poison and there are other toxins in these products as well. Nicotine can cause the heart to race. Young adults that have never used conventional cigarettes are gravitating to these devices because they look cool, smell cool and they are gadgety. The manufacturers are using slick marketing strategies to promote and sell their products and kids and parents feel there is no risk in using these products. The manufacturers market these products as a safe alternative to smoking and as a smoking cessation device. The appeal of these products to young adults is a selection of flavors. The 3 major tobacco companies are now manufacturing these products. Online sales also make getting these items very easy for young adults. Mrs. McNamara said RCASA has concerns with the increase in use of these products because kids are becoming addicted to nicotine which may lead to the abuse of other substances. Page 13 Mr. Robinson asked if the Decisions class was teaching the students about the risks of vaping. Mrs. McNamara said that she was working with the high school health educators to educate the staff and administration on what to look for regarding the vaping craze. Ms. DeAngelis commented that the perception by some students during a recent chemical health violation class is that more than 50%of RMHS students are vaping nicotine and see it as a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes. Steps we can take include being informed, update the curriculum and staff education, spread the word throughout the community and include information in our student handbooks. Chair Robinson thanked the group for presenting this information. D. Continued Business Superintendent's Evaluation Timeline and Process Mrs. Webb reviewed the timeline for the School Committee and Dr. Doherty reviewed the process. MASC Governance Program Discussion Dr. Doherty asked for guidance from the School Committee on the direction they would like to go with this opportunity. The consensus was that it is something they should participate in and agreed upon June 22m1 as the first workshop. Dr. Doherty's office will contact the MASC to confirm availability. E.
