READING RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
January 8, 2013 TOWN HALL — CONFERENCE ROOM
Attendance: Nancy -Linn Swain, Rec. Committee, Frank Driscoll, Rec. Committee Member, Rec.
Committee, Eric Hughes, Rec. Chairman, Adam Chase, Rec. Committee Member, Richard Hand,
Recreation Committee Member, Mary Ellen Stolecki, Rec. Committee Member, John Feudo,
Recreation Administrator
E. Hughes called the meeting to order at 7:08 PM.
N. Swain made a motion to accept the minutes from the December 11th Rec. Committee meeting.
R. Hand seconded the motion. Motion passed in favor of accepting the minutes for December 11,
2013 by a vote of 6 — 0- 0.
Administrators Report:
Program Coordinator, Jenna Fiorente gave the committee an update from programming through
December. She mentioned travel basketball, fencing and Sunday basketball were all going very
well. The Ski program recently began and had over 20 kids participating. She also mentioned
successes with Jr. League Basketball and Afterschool Programming.
J. Feudo mentioned that the skating area lights are now on.
Winter Classic — Amplified Sound Permit:
J. Feudo introduced Gino Molettieri from the Reading Youth Hockey presented his application for
amplified sounds for the Winter Classic Hockey program. Program would be ages 10 +. Around
100 games would be played on Castine Field for the weekend of January 25th. They are expecting
around 200 people at any given time.
M. Stolecki cautioned that loud intermittence music will anger people and to be aware of where the
sound is traveling.
The committee was concerned about pick up and drops off of players and asked for RYH to
consider a no parking area to help with visibility.
F. Driscoll made a motion to accept the proposed permit for amplified sound. R. Hand seconded
the motion. Motion passed in favor of allowing amplified sound permits to RYH for the winter
classic event as proposed by a vote of 5 -0 -1.
READING RECREATION COMMITTEE MINUTES January 8, 2013, CON'T
Non - Resident Surcharge:
J. Feudo handed out material regarding a proposal to charge non - residents extra for Reading
Recreation programs. J. Feudo said that the surcharge funding could be used in case a non - resident
needed special accommodations. Currently, if any participant requires special accommodations so
long as the division can afford it the accommodation needs to be paid for by the Town. The extra
revenue would be protection funding for those rare cases.
F. Driscoll made a motion to accept the proposal of a $5.00 surcharge on all applicable programs as
determined by the Recreation Division staff. R. Hand seconded the motion. Motion passes in favor
of the motion by a vote of 6 -0 -0.
F. Driscoll updated the committee on the letter he put together regarding the development on North
Main Street next to Mattera Cabin. J. Feudo stated he will send the letter to the committee via email
for comments. One collected the chairmen could sign the letter and have it sent to the CPDC.
RCASA Update:
R. Hand said the board had been spending some time mapping out strategy for the future. The teen
group recently presented a program to students about smokeless tobacco.
The Wellness Fair will take place on March 13 at the Field House.
RCASA received funding for 3 more years of staffing.
R. Hand and J. Feudo discussed the idea of tobacco free parks as a good initiative for the youth
crew to possibly take on.
F. Driscoll made a motion to adjourn. E. Hughes seconded the motion. Motion passed in favor of
adjournment by a vote of 6 -0 -0.
