Volunteer Appointment Subcommittee 7U14 ,JUL 23 P Rj Df Date: 2014 -06 -24 Time: 6:30 PM Building: Reading Town Hall Location: Conference Room Address: 16 Lowell Street Purpose: General Business Attendees: Members - Present: Chairman Daniel Ensminger, Kevin Sexton Members - Not Present: Others Present: Office Manager Paula Schena, Sandra Popaja and Christine Hansen Minutes Respectfully Submitted By: Secretary Topics of Discussion: The Volunteer Appointment Subcommittee interviewed Sandra Popaja and Christine Hansen for positions on Boards, Committees and Commissions. Sandra Popaja indicated she is from Bosnia and Croatia. She knows how Important it is to become involved in the community. She served on the Human Relations Advisory Committee In Colorado. She noted her interest in the Economic Development Committee also. She does management consulting with hospitals. She asked what options are being explored for the Economic Development grant. Kevin Sexton noted that the consulting firm she works for is located in Chicago and asked if that will create a problem. Ms. Popaja indicated that they have a local office in Boston. She does travel at times but she can work around that. Ms. Popaja asked what the Town's vision of Economic Development is and Kevin Sexton indicated the Town had an EDSAT done and we are waiting for the results. The Town will then take that information and create a master plan. Daniel Ensminger noted it will be a milestone focus. Christine Hansen noted that she is a Human Rights Advocate through training and education. She has served as a consultant to the Department of Justice, the Police Chief Association, Harvard Law School and the University of Buffalo Law School. She noted that there are many disabled seniors on the second floor of 30 Haven Street and the Police and Fire Departments created an evacuation plan for them. Daniel Ensminger asked what Issues she wants to address through the Human Relations Advisory Committee and Ms. Hansen noted that there is graffiti at 30 Haven Street. The community needs to know the protocol for reporting it because nobody called it in. She said it was disturbing swastika and offensive language. The community needs to be educated. Page I 1 Volunteer Appointment Subcommittee Minutes - June 24. 2014 - page 2 A motion by Ensminaer seconded by Sexton to recommend appointment of Sandra Popaia to an Associate position on the Economic Development Committee with a term expiring June 30, 2015 was approved by a vote of 2 -0 -0. A motion by Ensminaer seconded by Sexton to recommend appointment of Christine Hansen to a position on the Human Relations Advisory Committee with a term expiring June 30, 2015 was approved by a vote of 2 -0 -0. A motion by Ensminaer seconded by Sexton to recommend appointment of Sandra Popaia to an Associate Position on the Human Relations Advisory Committee with a term expiring June 30, 2015 was approved by a vote of 2 -0 -0. Daniel Ensminger noted that Roberta Sullivan was invited to come in three times for an interview for reappointment to the Historical Commission but was not available either time. The VASC declined to take a position on her reappointment and recommended that the position continue to be posted as a vacancy. If she wants to be considered for the position, the Volunteer Appointment Subcommittee will be happy to interview her. Approval of Minutes A motion by Sexton seconded by Ensminaer to approve the minutes of June 3. 2014 as amended was approved by a vote of 2 -0 -0. A motion by Sexton seconded by Ensminaer to approve the minutes of June 5, 2014 as amended was approved by a vote of 2 -0 -0. A motion by Sexton seconded by Ensminaer to adiourn the meeting at 7:00 p.m. was approved by a vote of 2 -0 -0. Respectfully submitted, Secretary Page 12
