HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-07-13 School Committee Minutes239 READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS Reading, Massachusetts SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES JULY 13, 1987 Call to Order Vice - Chairman Stanley Nissen called the regular meeting of the Reading School Committee to order at 7:30 p.m. on July 13, 1987 in the Superintendent's Conference Room at 34,Gould Street. All members of the School Committee were present, with the exception of Chairman George Shannon. Also present were the Superintendent - Elect, Robert J. Munnelly, and a number of parents and teachers. Mr. Nissen then announced that the meeting would consist of one agenda item, namely, interviews of the three finalist candidates for the Birch Meadow Principalship. Superintendent -Elect Munnelly spoke of the plans for the evenings's meeting saying that all three finalist candidates were strong contributors in their respective school systems, all would be effective and successful principals for Birch Meadow, and he could work comfortably with any of the three. He noted that three final interviews of the well - qualified finalists would help the School Committee know the candidates and participate more meaningfully in the choice of future for the Birch Meadow School. Candidate Jay Dumas, presently Math Teacher at- Parker and Director of Summer School, was the first finalist interviewed. He reviewed his career as a teacher and administrator and answered questions about his curriculum priorities and his views of the role of parents. The interview was completed in 35 minutes. Claire Flynn of the Barrows Elementary School spoke of her career as Reading Specialist, Director of Chapter I, Assistant Principal at the Highland School, and Reading's first Exemplary Teacher. The members of the School Committee asked questions of the candidate, similar to those asked of the previous finalist. Richard Davidson, Principal of the Huse School in Bath, Maine, spoke of his experiences and laid out the three key skills he felt a principal must demonstrate; intelligence skills, technical skills, and managerial skills. The questions of the School Committee took the interview time up to the agreed upon limit of 35 minutes. 240 READING SCHOOL COMMITTEE MINUTES 2 JULY 13, 1987 After a short recess, the members of the School Committee, in turn, shared their impressions and observations about the candidates with the Superintendent of Schools. Each took 5 minutes to discuss the strengths and their presentation of their skills. The meeting adjourned at 10:15 p.m.
