SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER
APRIL 21, 1988
Chairman George Shannon called the special meeting of the Reading School
Committee to order at 6:45 in the Pupil Services Conference Room at
Reading Memorial High School. All members were present except Mr. Coco.
Also present were Superintendent Robert Munnelly and Assistant Super-
intendent Ronald Winslow.
OLD BUSINESS
Central Office
Superintendent Munnelly briefed the School Committee on the recent
Finance Committee deliberations relating to relocation of the Super-
intendent's Office. The FinCom did not open the School Committee budget
for reconsideration but voted to have a member rise at Town Meeting and
amend the budget by adding $18,000 to pay one additional year's rent at
34 Gould Street.
In addition, the Superintendent gave the School Committee revised cost
estimates obtained from an architectural consultant for a move to the
FOCUS area at RMHS. New cost figures are estimated at $200,000.
Members of the School Committee shared their views of the issues.
Some wanted to stand on the original School Committee vote to relocate.
Others felt the FinCom's offer of additional money for rent could not be
ignored. By consensus, the School Committee agreed to put the article
for $200,000 forward and ask Town Meeting to decide. The School Com-
mittee will accept the $18,000 for one year if the $200,000 capital
improvement idea fails.
OTHER BUSINESS
The School Committee unanimously approved a waiver of the Sunday policy
to permit the Sophomore class to participate in the Walk for Hunger in
Boston on May 1, 1988.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
On a MOTION by Mr. Nissen, SECONDED by Ms. Lyons, the School Committee
by unanimous roll call VOTED to go into Executive Session. The time
was 7:15 p.m. The School Committee completed its Executive Session
at 7:30 and adjourned to Town Meeting.
