HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989-01-23 School Committee MinutesREADING PUBLIC SCHOOLS Reading, Massachusetts SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING REGULAR SESSION MINUTES JANUARY 23, 1989 CALL TO ORDER Chairman George Shannon called the regular meeting of the Reading School Committee to order at 7:33 p.m. in the Superintendent's Conference Room. All members were present with the exception of Matt McGee, Student Representative. Also present were Superinten- dent Dr. Robert J. Munnelly, Assistant Superintendents Lynn M. Bak and Ronald A. Winslow, Donald Allen, Finance Committee Chairperson and a reporter from the Chronicle. BILLS AND PAYROLLS The warrants for Bills and Payrolls were as follows: BILLS JANUARY 30, 1989 - General Expenses - $110,912.54 PAYROLLS January 27, 1989 - Weekly - $49,908.80 January 26, 1989 - Teachers - $400,569.68 OTHER Mr. Shannon commended the efforts of the Parker Middle School for changing their formal 8th grade dance, which would have incurred a great expense, to a more age appropriate pizza party type event. OLD BUSINESS BUDGET FY90 The budget procedure included having Dr. Munnelly give explana- tion line by line through each item under Salary and Expense. The School Committee members shared their views, reactions, through discussion. The Committee reviewed the second round of budget cuts, which included an additional $158,814. These cuts dealt with buildings, grounds and maintenance items. It was moved by Stan Nissen and seconded by Carol Lyons to accept the recommended budget cuts. The vote was unanimous. REGULAR SESSION MINUTES 2 JANUARY 23, 1989 Mr. Coco moved to eliminate carpeting requests from the FY90 budget The motion was seconded by Carol Lyons. Lengthy dis- cussion followed. The vote was 2 in favor, 3 opposed, and 1 abstention. The motion failed Stan Nissen suggested to examine: 1. what catagories are included in the budget 2. on an annual basis, have the School Committee target a percentage figure for increase purposes prior to the Superintendent going to the staff. This will be placed on a Spring meeting agenda. INFORMATION AND PROPOSALS Mr. Winslow provided members with a financial statement of account and expense balances and reviewed with the Committee a list of grants the Reading Public Schools receive. PERSONNEL ISSUES On the recommendation of the Adminstration, Carol Lyons moved to appoint Susan Lancella as a replacement substitute in the Math Department at Coolidge Middle School effective February 1, 1989 for the remainder of the school year. The motion was seconded by Margaret Cowell. The vote was unanimous. ADJOURNMENT At 11.30 p.m., Richard Coco made a motion to adjourn to Executive Session The motion was seconded by Margaret Cowell.
