HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992-01-27 School Committee MinutesREADING PUBLIC SCHOOLS Reading, Massachusetts SCHOOL COMMITTEE OPEN HEARING OPEN HEARING MINUTES JANUARY 27, 1992 CALL TO ORDER Chair Barbara Philbrick called School Committee to order at 7:25 p.m. in the Parker Middle School Auditorium. All members were present with the exception of Mary Williams. Also present were Superintendent Robert J. Munnelly and Assistant Superintendent Lynn M. Bak. Chair Philbrick opened the meeting by introducing Principal John Delaney, who in turn thanked President Spignesi and Vice President Langone for their great support and that of Parker parents organized as the Parker P.T.O. PT(_HT.Tr_PT Dr. Delaney then introduced Parker faculty member Joan Clifford who would give a "Highlight" about the foreign language program of the middle schools of Reading. She reviewed the philosophical basis of the program and on the teaching methodology used in the classrooms. In the course of her presentation, she demonstrated the type of activities used with students, and exhibited some of the teacher -made materials which are a key part of the coursework. OPEN HEARING AND DISCUSSION At this time the Chair opened up the meeting for comments from the audience. . A parent asked about putbacks. School Committee members explained the putback list and the process it will take in anticipation of money becoming available. Another question raised by a parent was in regard to Latin as a basic requirement for students in middle school. The Committee advised that this was discussion of a study committee years ago. A citizen commented about the importance of home economics and industrial arts to middle school students. Praise for the Foreign Language program was expressed from another parent, who also asked if Foreign Language could be a two year program. Principal Delaney commented that Parker facilities are in need of upgrading. Another comment from a parent was in regard to standardized testing school by school. OPEN HEARING 2 JANUARY 27, 1992 Other questions raised by the audience included regionalization, collaboration, and school reform. A parent emphasized that we should not be talking cuts, but how we can improve and build on the good things. Comments were made by another parent in support of Mr. Seely and the Music program. SCHOOL COMMITTEE BRIEFING ON BUDGET FY 93 Chair Philbrick briefed the School Committee on the recent developments of funding options to the town. She shared meeting outcomes between the leadership of the Selectmen, Town Manager, Superintendent and herself as School Committee Chair. Issues being discussed are monies anticipated from the State, and the availability of town monies for level funding the school budget that would result from eliminating the funding of local trash collection. Selectmen and the Town Manager will be discussing the option of level funding the school budget at the Selectmen's meeting scheduled for Tuesday, January 28, 1992. Superintendent Munnelly noted that the town officials are to be commended for taking the steps toward identifying education as a town priority. Discussion continued with reference to the cut list as established by the School Committee and the proposed putback list. ADJOURNMENT At 9:26 p.m. Stanley Nissen moved to adjourn.
