SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
OPEN HEARING MINUTES NOVEMBER 4, 1993
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Roberta D' Antona called the open hearing to order at the
Killam Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. All members were pre-
sent. Dennis Richards the Assistant Superintendent was also
present.
WELCOME
The Parent Teacher Organization Co- Presidents Mary Cummings
and Linda Goodemote welcomed the School Committee and
acknowledged the dedicated teachers, principal and parents of
the Killam Elementary School.
HIGHLIGHT
Principal Paul Guerrette introduced the presenters, four
fourth grade teachers from Killam. Linda Carey discussed some
examples of alternative assessment. Joe Buckley outlined the
process that lead the teachers to consider developing
alternative assessment techniques. He and Ellen Zermani also
described their work on the Massachusetts Department of Educa-
tion's Mathematics Portfolio Project. Virginia Cramer
explained some of the assessment components of the fourth
grade's social studies units. Ellen Zermani discussed some of
the assessment ideas she learned at Harvard University
Department of Education's Mathematics Portfolio Project.
The teachers answered questions about assessment from the
School Committee and the parents.
ADJOURN
At 8:40 p.m. George Shannon moved to adjourn. Matthew
Cumminqs seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous.
