SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
OPEN HEARING MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER
OCTOBER 12, 1993
Vice -Chair Timothy Twomey called the open hearing to order at
the Joshua Eaton School at 7:35 p.m. All members were present
with the exception of Roberta D'Antona and Matthew Cummings.
George Shannon was expected to arrive later. Also present
were Superintendent Robert J. Munnelly, Assistant Superinten-
dent Dennis A. Richards and Joshua Eaton Principal Donald
Farnham.
GROUND BREAKING
Dr. Munnelly announced he has received authorization from the
Department of Education to proceed with Birch Meadow School's
ground breaking. Phase one of construction will take place
later this month and phase two will begin this spring with
completion scheduled for September, 1994.
He also mentioned that the Joshua Eaton construction project
will begin in the summer of 1994 for completion in September,
1995.
WELCOME
Principal Farnham welcomed the School Committee and the
Reading citizens who were in attendance. He introduced Kathy
Sheedy, Vice President of the PTA, who reviewed PTA activities
at Joshua Eaton School for the fall of 1993.
HIGHLIGHTS
Principal Farnham introduced teachers Elia Marnik, Barbara
McLean and Marcia Gibbons who discussed Joshua Eaton's Global
School projects. They indicated that Eaton is one of 14
schools in the country that received an ASCD grant to foster
global education. The teachers then talked about the year
they spent developing materials that would allow teachers to
integrate global education throughout the curriculum. Three
projects that parents and all teachers support are Global
School Activities. They are, the Reading Incentive Program,
Adopt -An Island, and the Sister School Exchange. The
presenters are very pleased with the success of these projects
and hope to expand the Sister School Exchange this year.

The teachers also developed a calendar to help the Joshua
Eaton teachers integrate global education into all subject
areas throughout the year. At each faculty meeting all
teachers have an opportunity to share their experiences and
thoughts about the activities with each other. As a format
for stimulating creativity on innovation, Mr. Farnham and the
teachers are pleased with how well it has been received by
staff.
The teachers answered questions from the School Committee and
from the audience regarding their presentation.
School Committee received questions and comments from the
audience.
ADJOURN
At 8:30 p.m. Thomas Stohlman moved to adjourn from the Open
_Hearing. Susan Cavicchi seconded the motion. The vote was
unanimous.
