HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-02-22 School Committee MinutesREADING PUBLIC SCHOOLS Reading, Massachusetts SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING OPEN HEARING MINUTES CALL TO ORDER FEBRUARY 22, 1993 Chairman Matthew Cummings called the open meeting of the School Committee to order at 7:05 p.m. in the Berger Conference Room at Reading Town Hall. All members of the School Committee were present with the exception of George Shannon. Superintendent Robert J. Munnelly was also present. NEW BUSINESS FY 1994 BUDGET Mr. Cummings explained that the School Committee would examine the impact that a possible Proposition 2 1/2 override would have on the fees charged to participants of the school athletic and music programs. He briefed the School Committee and the public on Town Manager's and Selectmen's override concept outlining the proposed override of $2,5000,000: $1,002,274 40.1% (Trash) $1,009,700 40.4% (38K short of level service budget and salaries) $ 204,000 Capital Projects $ 284,000 Municipal Operations -0- Utilizes all of the $2,500,000. Includes operating expenses that have been presented for FY94 and adds in the salary increases. Chair Cummings added that another factor in the overall school budget equation is the state sponsored Education Reform Act, which could return as much as $465,000 to the Town for lowering the levy limit. For discussion purposes, Mr. Cummings present- ed the Town Manager's proposal of how we could handle the $814,000 if Education Reform passed as follows: $60,000 $70,000 $30,000 $90,000 $99,000 $465,000 $814,000 Portable Roof Track Athletic Fees Free Cash To reduce Levy this amount) and Music Donation (Stay under Levy limit by OPEN HEARING MINUTES 2 FEBRUARY 22, 1993 The concensus of the School Committee if the Education Reform Act does not pass is that the portable would then need to be included on the warrant and that fees for athletics and music also be funded out of the $1,009,700 as priority for passage of the override.
