HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995-04-24 School Committee MinutesREADING PUBLIC SCHOOLS Reading, Massachusetts SCHOOL COMMITTEE MINUTES REGULAR SESSION APRIL 24 1995 CALL TO ORDER Chair Timothy Twomey called the regular session of the School Committee to order at 6:07 p.m. in the Reading Memorial High School Staff Center. All members were present. Also present were Assistant Superintendent Dennis Richards, RMHS Principal Rena Mirkin and Student Representative Christine Cerratani. BILLS The warrants for bills were as follows: April 18, 1995 - Bills - $370,452.80 April 24, 1995 - Bills - $186,362.24 ITEMS AS NECESSARY Mr. Stohlman asked the School Committee to appoint a School Committee member as a liaison to a teen center sub - committee of the Reading Recreation Committee. Susan Cavicchi moved that Robert Spadafora be the School Committee's liaison to the teen center sub - committee of the Reading Recreation Committee Matthew Cummings seconded the motion The vote was unanimous. SUPERINTENDENT SELECTION COMMITTEE Chair Twomey reviewed the Superintendent's Selection Committee Policy that calls for 8 members: 4 education members and 4 non - education members. It was noted that 14 selection committee applications have been received. Chair Twomey proposed that the School Committee rank order of the non - education and the education members and suggested that the top 4 in each group would be appointed. The School Committee selected Joan Coco, Stanley Nissen, Nancy Stager and Dennis LaCroix as the 4 non - education members for the Superintendent's Selection Committee. REGULAR SESSION MINUTES 2 APRIL 24 1995 The School Committee selected Joan McKinnon, Keith Manville, Nancy Drexler, and Bill Cowles to be the educators on the Superintendent's Selection Committee. The School Committee members asked the Assistant Superintendent to arrange to phone each member of the Superintendent's Selection Committee and to send a letter informing them of the appointment and to advise the first meeting would be held on Tuesday, May 2. Chair Twomey reported that Bill MacDonald, of Winchester Associates, has 50+ applicants and has advised that the time schedule is tight. Chair Twomey asked if the School Committee was willing to identify a Chair. Ms. D'Antona suggested the School Committee select an interim chair to oversee the process. The Selection Committee could then select their own chair once they were established. Chair Twomey asked the School Committee to schedule its first meeting and appoint 2 school committee non - voting liaisons to the Selection Committee. The School Committee agreed to identity an interview chair and set a first meeting date. Mr. Stohlman and Ms. D'Antona volunteered to be the School Committee liaisons. The School Committee asked the Assistant Superintendent to communicate a message to the chair of the Selection Committee that the policy for open meeting laws must be followed All open meeting's minutes must be taken, approved and filed. The School Committee members agreed to appoint Stan Nissen as Interim Chair and Keith Manville as alternate Interim Chair. Chair Twomey asked the Assistant Superintendent to arrange a meeting between Bill MacDonald, Stanley Nissen and Chair Twomey on Wednesday or Thursday at 6 p.m. in the RMHS library conference room. The School Committee members set Tuesday, May 2nd at the Parker Middle School as the first full Screening Committee meeting. Mr. Cummings asked if the May 1 st School Committee meeting could be held at the lecture hall. Mr. Richards stated lie would make those arrangements. ADJOURN At 6:45 o.m. Mr. Stohlman moved to adjourn to executive session for the purpose of negotiating, discussions. He noted the Selectmen would join them later. Ms D'Antona seconded the motion The vote was unanimous.
