Regular Session June 9, 2003
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Dahl called the meeting to order at 5:20 p.m. in the Superintendent's Conference
Room. Present were School Committee members Carpenter, Cavicchi, Dahl, McFadden,
Russo and Spadafora.
Chair Dahl stated that the purpose of the meeting is to conduct interviews with the two
finalists for the position of superintendent. Chair Dahl stated that the interviews would
be followed by a discussion of the two candidates and the direction the Committee plans
to take. Chair Dahl stated that the members of the Committee who did the site visit
would brief the Committee on the site visits after the interviews.
BILLS & PAYROLL
Bills and payroll circulated for signature.
CITIZENS' INPUT
There was no citizen input.
INTERVIEWS
Chair Dahl stated that he hoped the format this evening would be a free flow of questions
from the Committee.
Chair Dahl welcomed Dr. Ruane and thanked her for the site visit. The Committee
interviewed Dr. Ruane.
Chair Dahl thanked Dr. Ruane for her time.
At 6:45 p.m. the Committee took a brief recess.
At 7:00 p.m. Chair Dahl called the meeting back to order.
Chair Dahl welcomed Dr. Schettini and thanked him for the site visit. The Committee
interviewed Dr. Schettini.

At 8:15 p.m. the Committee took a short recess.
At 8:20 p.m. Chair Dahl called the meeting back to order.
Chair Dahl reviewed the search process to date and the decision to move forward with
two finalist candidates.
Mr. Spadafora, Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Russo discussed the site visits. They discussed the
different styles and experiences of each of the candidates.
Mr. Kirtman stated that the Committee needs to look at what the community has stated
they want in a leader for the schools.
The Committee discussed the candidates and how they believed they would fit with the
community.
Mr. Spadafora moved to direct the Chairman of the School Committee to enter into
contract negotiations with Patrick Schettini, Jr. for the position of Superintendent
of the Reading Public Schools. Ms. Cavicchi seconded the motion. The vote was 6 -0
Mr. Carpenter, Ms. Cavicchi, Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Russo and Mr.
Spadafora.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
At 9:00 p.m. Ms. Cavicchi moved to enter into executive session for the purpose of
conducting strategy sessions in preparation for negotiations on the Superintendent's
contract, not to return to regular session. Mr. Spadafora seconded the motion. The
vote was 6 -0 Mr. Carpenter, Ms. Cavicchi, Mr. Dahl, Mr. McFadden, Mr. Russo
and Mr. Spadafora.
