MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL 2013 FEB 13 P 5= 52
February 4, 2013
A meeting of the Wood End School Council was held on Monday, February 4 from 3:15
until 4:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Wood End Elementary School, Reading,
Massachusetts.
Council Members Present:
Joanne King, Maureen Fennessy, Sandy Emery, Pooja Parsons, Maria Walsh, and Mia
Gaska. Barbara Sheehan and Stephanie Malone were not present.
Call to Order:
Principal Joanne King called the meeting to order at 3:15 PM. Mia Gaska, secretary,
recorded the minutes. A quorum of Council Members was present, and the meeting
having been duly convened, was ready to proceed with business.
Minutes
All members present reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting held on January 7,
2013. A motion was made to accept the minutes by Sandy Emery, Maria Walsh did
second the motion. Minutes were approved.
Old Business
Mrs. King discussed the final updates that had been made to the Parent Handbook. The
Council thanked Mrs. King again for her diligent effort in creating this document and
conferred about its distribution. A motion was made to accept the Wood End Parent
Handbook by Sandy Emery, Pooja Parsons did second the motion. The Handbook was
approved and will soon be posted on the Wood End Edline page for all families to access.
New Business
Wood End Family Survey
Principal King shared the results of the recently completed Family Survey. The results
provided some helpful feedback for the school about technology, safety and the school's
atmosphere. She will compile the information and share the results with parents at an
upcoming PTO meeting.
Update on Community Service
The Community Service projects and future fundraiser updates were reviewed.
• Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: The campaign has begun and after the first
week of collection, the school has already exceeded their goal, recording $1,700
collected. The campaign will run until February 15''. The arrangements for the
group home in Reading that will receive the Olive Garden lunch are being
finalized by Principal King.
• Reading Food Pantry: This collection drive will be headed up by Monette
Verrier.
• Mission of Deeds: Barbara Sheehan will be organizing this community service
project.
Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee
On Friday, January 25th the Health, Wellness and Safety Committee met for the first time.
Led by Principal King, the members of this newly formed committee include: Lisa
Suglia, School Nurse, Charlene McManus, Cafeteria Manager, Mark Atkinson, School
Councilor, Justin Martel, RPD, Carrie Feeney, parent, Sophia Gellot, parent, Lisa
Labriola, parent, and Jill DiCara, parent. The committee's purpose was established and
will focus around the safety at morning drop -off, clearly established playground rules to
prevent injuries, and awareness surrounding healthy snacks and the salad bar option at
lunchtime.
Other
Class of 2011 Gift
Representing the parents of the Class of 2011, Sandy Emery encouraged Mrs. King to
consider purchasing a Wood End sign for the end of the driveway of the school. The
Class of 2010 is still hoping to install a basketball hoop /court on the field with the
support of the DPW. This option is still being investigated.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m. The School Council will resume discussions at
their next meeting on April 1, 2013.
