School Council Meeting AOtNG, MASS.
MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL 11113 AN 22 P 1: 34,
April 8, 2013
A meeting of the Wood End School Council was held on Monday, April 8th from 3:15
until 4:15 p.m. in the conference room of the Wood End Elementary School, Reading,
Massachusetts.
Council Members Present:
Joanne King, Maureen Fennessy, Pooja Parsons, Maria Walsh, Barbara Sheehan,
Stephanie Malone and Mia Gaska. Sandy Emery was not present.
Call to Order:
Principal Joanne King called the meeting to order at 3:15 PM. Mia Gaska, secretary,
recorded the minutes. A quorum of Council Members was present, and the meeting
having been duly convened, was ready to proceed with business.
Minutes
All members present reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting held on February
4, 2013. A motion was made to accept the minutes by Stephanie Malone; Barbara
Sheehan did second the motion. Minutes were approved with one correction: The
basketball court was to be a gift from the class of 2010, not 2011.
Old Business:
Community Service
Barbara Sheehan updated the committee on the Mission of Deeds community service
project. She will be meeting with Mr. Bruce Murison to further discuss the details of the
project. The kickoff will take place during the next all- school meeting. The next
community service project, scheduled for May, will be with the Reading Food Pantry.
Mrs. King explained the plans for the luncheon that is being donated from the Olive
Garden, through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This event will take place in
May with the help of Mrs. Malone's class and Mrs. Duffy's class, who were the classes
with the largest fund raising amounts.
Health, Wellness and Safety Committee
Principal King recapped the Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee meeting's
discussion of the morning drop -off procedures. The details of clearly marking the drop-
off lane and sending parent reminders for safety were discussed.
New Business:
Kindergarten Changes
The Kindergarten Screening will take place at Wood End on April 251h at which time
Principal King will discuss the new format for the 2013 -2014 school year. The new set-
up will include an integrated/hybrid model of full and half day students evenly distributed
into two Kindergarten classrooms to optimize space constraints, maintain low class size,
and keep students in their neighborhood school.
Other:
Class of 2010 Gift
The money for the Class of 2010 gift will no longer be used to build a basketball court at
Wood End. Ideas for the gift will be brought to the staff for further discussion.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m. The School Council will resume discussions at
their next meeting on May 6, 2013.
