HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-02-06 School Council - Walter S Parker Middle MinutesSCHOOL COUNCIL MINUTES Meeting called by: Beth Beaulieu Parent Members: Chris Downey chrisdowneygverizon.net (daughters Michelle grade 8) Teacher Members: Attendees: Lauren Luskin Lauren .luskinna,reading.kl2.ma.us Principals: Beth Beaulieu beth.beaulieukreading.kl1ma.us AGENDA ITEMS Topic • 5:00 to 5:05 p.m. — Catching Up February 6, 2013 S:00pm Parker Middle School Main ice- Conference Room • 5:05 to 5:15 p.m. — Acceptance of minutes from January 9, 2013 meeting — there was not a quorum • 5:20 to 5:50 p.m. — Teacher Report, Lauren Luskin - Budget Update - Curriculum Update • 5:50 to 6:00 p.m. — Question & Answers Minutes: Budget Update: • Budget passed the school committee and has been sent to the town • 1/2 time position for LLD presented • School committee put forward three new positions Goals: • Mid -year goal meetings with administrators and teachers • Continuing with similar school themes around making work public and marking our progress as a school on the work and progress of students • Lauren Luskin reported on how the rubrics are working on the Downstairs Team and how it relates to the school goals Teacher Professional Development: • Steve Leinwand - Math teachers in the district met and trained with national leader in mathematics reform, Steve Leinwand at the beginning of February. • Other questions about math department changes are being discussed by the principals at the middle and high school Questions from the School Council about the math presentation at Future Freshman, • Alg 2017 as a one year course makes sense, but the naming continues to be confusing • Many parents had questions about the implication of students who start higher in math and want to drop. What course would they drop into and would that be a repeated course or just a slower pace? • Parents would like a flow chart for courses similar to the Foreign Language department and the opt out plan for students who need /want to drop down a level. Teacher Report: Lauren Luskin • Enrichment during team time to assist students needing more support, reinforcement • For students that don't need additional support or instruction, teachers use it for enrichment of the content area they teach.
