Minutes for the November 5, 2012 Meeting
Attendees: Principal Eric Sprung, Joanne Garelick, Patricia Beckman, Julie Fantasia, Neovi Plankey, and Laura
Villarroel.

- Read and agreed to approve minutes of October 1, 2012 meeting. Decided on flexible format for
recording meeting minutes.
Discussed Environmental Awareness Ideas
• General ideas included: climate change, water conservation, light conservation, indoor vs.
outdoor environment; student - designed art for signs with environmental awareness themes;
competitions around design; competitions around environmental awareness goals (i.e. reducing
the number of recycled bottles per class in lieu of reusable water bottles); calendars with
artwork; signs that would focus on conserving school resources such as paper towels, tissues,
pencils, etc; clothing/toy drives (costumes or coats); literacy component (books, read aloud, Time
for Kids); book drive /swap; coinciding with Earth Day via assembly or school wide activity;
hallway clean -up; small budget for supplies (— $100).
• Agreed upon an interior- based Environmental Awareness approach which would commence in
January and be built upon over the remainder of the year. First theme would be around
replacing recyclable water bottles with reusable bottles (i.e. Thermos), which may include "Bring
Your Thermos to Movie Night" or sale of Birch Meadow Water Bottle.
■ Dec 3, 2012 meeting will be a working meeting in Mrs. Beckman's classroom in which a
more structured approach will be defined, including:
• Creation of a flyer to notify students and community about upcoming events
• Text of morning announcements (Fridays)
• Text of Principal's Thursday email to parents
• PTO messaging
• Classroom communications
• Patricia Beckman to check with Reading Trophy on pricing of water bottles
• Neovi Plankey to check with Jen Reilly on inclusion of water bottles in Birch
Meadow merchandise.
The meeting adjourned at 4:OOpm. The next meeting will take place Monday, December 3, 2012 in Patricia
Beckman's classroom.
