School Council Meeting
MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE SCHOOL COUNCIL 2013 .JAN I u P 1* 18
January 7, 2013
A meeting of the Wood End School Council was held on Monday, January 7th from 3:15
until 4:15 p.m. in the conference room of the Wood End Elementary School, Reading,
Massachusetts.
Council Members Present:
Joanne King, Maureen Fennessy, Sandy Emery, Maria Walsh, Barbara Sheehan,
Stephanie Malone, and Mia Gaska. Pooja Parsons was not present.
Call to Order:
Principal Joanne King called the meeting to order at 3:15 PM. Mia Gaska, secretary,
recorded the minutes. A quorum of Council Members was present, and the meeting
having been duly convened, was ready to proceed with business.
Minutes
All members present reviewed the minutes from the previous meeting held on November
5, 2012. A motion was made to accept the minutes by Barbara Sheehan, and Sandy
Emery did second the motion. Minutes were approved.
Old Business
Joanne thanked Maureen Fennessey, co- chair, for her help in working with her to update
the Wood End Parent Handbook. The draft was shared and suggestions for changes were
made. The Council thanked Joanne for her diligent effort in creating this document and
the plan was made to review the document for any changes and vote on the document at
our next meeting.
New Business
Wood End Family Survey
As part of Principal King's goal, she shared a draft of a survey for Wood End families
that she created. It was reviewed and suggestions and changes were made. The survey
will be sent out to all Wood End family and community members in January. Results
will be shared at a future PTO meeting.
Update on Community Service
The Community Service projects and Future Fundraiser Updates were reviewed.
• Anton's Coat Drive: The Coat Drive is coming to a close and has been very
successful.
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: The kick -off all- school meeting is set for
Friday, January 18 at 1:45. The campaign will run from January 28th until
February 15th. The Olive Garden has agreed to make arrangements to donate the
pasta lunch to a group home in Reading.
• Reading Food Pantry: This collection drive will be run by assigning each grade
level to bring in a specific non - perishable food items, to be collected throughout
the month of March.
• Mission of Deeds: Barbara Sheehan shared that the collection drive will be run by
assigning each grade level to bring in specific items needed throughout the month
of April.
Health, Wellness, and Safety Committee
Mrs. King shared that she currently has about 6 parents interested in joining the Health,
Wellness, and Safety Committee. The committee will also include the following staff
members: Lisa Suglia, school nurse, Cafeteria Manager, Charlene McManus, Mark
Atkinson, School Psychologist. The first meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 25th at
8:30 a.m. when the committee will discuss finding Walk -to- School - Wednesday
volunteers, a "Safe Routes to School" Chairperson, and suggestions for support around
morning drop -off.
Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 4:15 p.m. The School Council will resume discussions at
their next meeting on February 4, 2013.
