HomeMy WebLinkAbout2012-10-10 School Committee MinutesReading Public Schools Reading, Massachusetts Regular Meeting of the School Committee Open Session Date: October 10, 2012 Time: 6:00 p.m. Place: Reading Senior Center School Committee Members Present Karen Janowski Hal Croft Rob Spadafora Lisa Gibbs Chris Caruso Chuck Robinson Call to Order Staff Members Present John Doherty, Superintendent RECEIVED TOWN CLERK READING, MASS. 2012 NOV - l A 8. 21 Patty de Garavilla, Assistant Superintendent Mary DeLai, Assistant Superintendent Conner Traugot, Student Representative Chairperson Janowski called the School Committee to order at 6:00 p.m. She reviewed the agenda. Mr. Croft moved, seconded by Mr. Caruso, to go into Executive Session to consider the purchase, exchange, lease or value of real property because the Chair has declared that an open meeting may have a detrimental effect on the negotiating portion of the public body and to reconvene in Open Session. The motion carried on a roll call vote 6 -0. Mr. Robinson, Mr. Caruso, Mr. Spadafora, Mr. Croft, Mrs. Gibb and Mrs. Janowski. The meeting recessed at 6:02 p.m. The meeting was called back to order at 6:40 p.m. II. Recommended Procedure A. Public Input (I) None B. Continued Business 1. Continued Discussion Elementary Space Study Superintendent Doherty updated the Committee on construction options, renting or buying property, and building a new school to address the elementary space needs. He recommends postponing the creation of a School Building Committee at this time. . , Az- October 10, 2012 Mr. Spadafora moved, seconded by Mr. Robinson to postpone the creation of a School Building Committee until further notice. The motion carried 6 -0. Capital Plan Request Dr. Doherty updated the School Committee on the status of implementing full day kindergarten for all in the 2013 -2014 school year. He stated that implementation would have a significant impact of the budget and art and music programs would be displaced. He recommends that the School Committee postpone the implementation of full day kindergarten for all until a long term solution has been identified for permanent space. He went on to ask the School Committee to vote to change the purpose for the $400,000 in the Capital Plan to include the exploration of permanent solutions beyond modular classrooms. Mr. Croft moved, seconded by Mr. Caruso, to request Town Meeting to revise the scope of the FY13 School Department Capital appropriation in the amount of $400,000 to include the exploration of the feasibility of alternatives beyond modular classrooms. Town Manager Hechenbleikner explained the process. It would require an amendment for capital. The motion carried 6 -0. III. Adjournment Mr. Croft moved, seconded by Mrs. Gibbs, to adiourn.
